1 SEP 2026 update: We are relieved to hear that both firefighters suffered non life-threatening injuries and have been released from the hospital.

Yesterday the Samburg-Reelfoot Volunteer Fire Department's tanker crashed while responding to a fire in Union City's rural fire protection district. We don't have updates on injuries to the two responding firefighters, which is our highest concern. We can only hope for a speedy recovery for both. We hope that you all will keep these firefighters and the other members of their department in your prayers. Firefighting has always been a dangerous business and Obion County is blessed to have men and women like them who are willing to step up and respond in service to their community.

The idea behind the iPhone crash alert is good, and in practice it can be a good thing. But it is also responsible for lots of false alarms.

If your phone happens to get triggered because you dropped it or slammed on your brakes (hey, it happens), cancel the alert if you can. If you can't, 911 will be on the line. Just tell them it was a mistake and that there's no emergency. If you disconnect, 911 may call you back. If everything is OK, let them know and there's no harm done. That way, police, fire, and EMS won't have to search for a phantom emergency.

There is a 60-day delay between the time we submit a report and the time it's published, but you can still learn a lot about how busy different departments are, how they're staffed, etc.
