Community Helpers Week 🚓📚🏍️

A huge thank you to Safari Kids Director Ms. Maliha and the amazing staff for coordinating a special visit from our COPPS and Traffic Unit during Community Helpers Week!

Our officers enjoyed spending time with the students by reading stories to the children, sharing what we do, answering their thoughtful questions, and helping them learn about the important role law enforcement plays in keeping our community safe.

The fun continued as the kids had the opportunity to sit on our police motorcycles and take individual photos with the officers—creating memories they won’t soon forget!

A special shout-out to Crime Analyst Carmen Martinez for taking individual photos of the students and helping capture these special moments for the children and their families.

We truly appreciate the warm welcome and the opportunity to connect with these bright young learners. Thank you for making this experience so special and memorable!

Date of Investigation: May 29, 2026
Incident: UCPD Case #260529006 Stolen Vehicle Barricaded Suspect
Location: 1000 Block of E Street

On Friday, May 29, 2026, at approximately 2:39 p.m., dispatchers received a report from the victim of a vehicle theft in San Jose. The victim advised that her vehicle had been stolen by a known suspect who may be in Union City. The victim also reported that the suspect was known to carry a firearm, although it was unknown whether he was armed at the time.

At approximately 3:02 p.m., the information was broadcast to officers. Five minutes later, an officer located the stolen vehicle, a gold 2007 Honda Pilot, in the area of 9th Street in Union City. Officers initiated a high-risk vehicle stop, and the vehicle came to a stop in the 1000 block of E Street.

The suspect, 26-year-old Alonzo Hernandez of Milpitas, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He complied with commands to turn off the vehicle and discard the keys but refused repeated commands to exit. Officers observed Hernandez yelling at officers, making obscene gestures, and refusing to cooperate.

Due to information that the suspect may have been armed and his increasingly erratic behavior, additional resources were requested, including armored rescue vehicles, an unmanned aircraft system, a police K-9 team, crisis negotiators, and assistance from a neighboring law enforcement agency.

During the investigation, officers learned Hernandez had an active felony warrant for a probation violation from a neighboring county and had previously been involved in an incident in which a firearm was recovered. Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place, and a Nixle alert was issued asking the public to avoid the area. Emergency medical personnel were also staged nearby as a precaution.

Officers and crisis negotiators remained in contact with Hernandez for more than two hours. Hernandez repeatedly concealed his hands from officers and reached into areas of the vehicle that could not be readily observed, despite repeated commands to keep his hands visible. Combined with statements he made during the incident, these actions increased concern that the encounter could rapidly escalate into a deadly force situation.

At approximately 5:18 p.m., Hernandez exited the vehicle but refused commands to place his hands behind his back or lie on the ground. Concerned that he could re-enter the vehicle, gain access to a weapon, or otherwise escalate the situation, officers deployed less-lethal flexible baton projectiles and a police K-9 to take him into custody.

Hernandez was safely detained without further incident. Officers immediately rendered medical aid, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor, non-life-threatening injuries. A firearm was not located on Hernandez or inside the vehicle.

A criminal complaint will be submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for vehicle theft, resisting, delaying, or obstructing a peace officer, and his outstanding felony warrant.

Union City Police Department would like to thank the residents and community members affected by the incident for their patience, cooperation, and compliance with shelter-in-place notifications and requests to avoid the area. Their assistance helped officers safely resolve the incident while minimizing risks to the public.

This investigation remains active. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Union City Police Department 510-471-1365 or anonymously at [email protected] or 510-675-5207

PIO for this incident is Sgt. Hayward 510-714-1694

In July 2025, UCPD assigned two additional officers to the Traffic Unit, achieving full staffing for the first time in decades. Since then, enforcement for the year has increased by 412%, contributing to a reduction in traffic-related incidents. The unit plays a vital role in addressing community concerns and improving roadway safety through enforcement and public awareness. We appreciate their continued efforts to keep our roads safe.
