Hydrants. (Revisit)
Been sacked with water supply questions. Which got me thinking, is it really a lost art that slipped through the cracks?
Anyway……
The most unsexy thing there prob is. However, for those of us who them need to have a complete understanding of not only their inner workings, but also how to trouble shoot them. The is arguably the only piece of FireFighting “equipment” that MANY organizations, including private sector & civilians have access to.
They come in different shapes, sizes. They can be wet or dry. They can be above ground, or under ground. As easy as it may seem to many to use, that then causes its care and wellbeing to be overlooked. ANY run we go on we inspect, and flush the nearest hydrant.
Ensure the hydrant bag is set up for trouble shooting to include a pipe wrench, and a rubber mallet. ALWAYS flush the hydrant before use. Even if it’s a familiar hydrant. ANYONE could have used it or tampered with it.
Understand, GPM puts fire out not only choose a good hydrant but put Apparatus positioning is imperative. No weird angles so we can avoid any and all kinks.
