Everyone remember we are still doing our annual school supply drive!! Drop-off locations at Union PD and Union Public Library. We will be taking donations at Country Day as well.

The City of Union Police Department is excited to partner with the Kemper-Newton Regional Library System for this year's Third Annual Lawmen for Learning School Supply Drive!

For the past two years, our community has come together to help local students start the school year with the supplies they need to succeed. This year, we're thrilled to welcome the Kemper-Newton Regional Library System as our partner in making the drive even bigger and better.

From now through September 1, 2026, we will be collecting new school supplies for local students.

Donations may be dropped off at either of the following locations:

320 Front Street

📍 Union Public Library
101 Peachtree Street

Whether it's a pack of pencils, notebooks, glue sticks, paper, or any other new school supplies, every donation helps make a difference.

Let's make this year's drive the biggest one yet!

The citizens of this town repeatedly amaze and humble us here at the Union Police Department.

In Union, Mississippi, we can post a picture on social media asking for a name to put with a face; and, in less than 30 minutes, have officers standing on that person’s doorstep.

Why?

Because the CITIZENS of this city continually step up and speak up. You pay attention. You know your neighbors. And when your Police Department asks for help, you answer.

That kind of relationship between a community and its Police Department is something special, and it is something we never want to take for granted.

There’s nowhere else on this earth quite like Union, Mississippi...

And we kinda like it that way.

Thank you, Union. Keep looking out for one another, and keep looking out for your community.

Last night, during a regularly scheduled training session, the Union Police Department recognized Officer James Morgan Leach, Jr. with the department’s Meritorious Service Award for his actions during a structure fire at Hilltop Manor in Union.

During the early morning hours of August 20, 2026, Officer Leach and his partner, Officer Cook, responded to a report of a possible structure fire at Hilltop Manor. Upon arrival, Officer Leach located the fire, assessed the severity of the situation, and immediately requested a response from the Union Fire Department.

With smoke filling the building and residents still inside, Officer Leach entered the structure and began evacuating residents who were unable to escape on their own. According to multiple independent witnesses, Officer Leach made repeated entries into the smoke-filled building, carrying multiple disabled and elderly residents to safety.

Officer Leach acted without hesitation in circumstances that presented a significant danger to his own safety. His actions demonstrated exemplary courage, decisive action under extreme conditions, and a profound dedication to the preservation of human life.

In recognition of these actions, Chief Mitch Kennedy presented Officer Leach with the first Meritorious Service Award in the history of the Union Police Department.

We are exceptionally proud to recognize Officer Leach for his courage and service to the citizens of Union. His actions that morning exemplify the commitment we expect of ourselves when members of our community need us most.

Congratulations, Officer Leach, and thank you for a job exceptionally well done.

EDIT: We appreciate everyone checking up and offering help. Let us clarify a few things. Hilltop Manor is still standing. The residents are safe. There is no lasting structural damage. The fire consisted of some items inside the building which were not actual structural components of the building. We apologize for any distress that may have been caused by releasing this statement praising our officer before Hilltop or other entities had the opportunity to prepare a public statement or make certain notifications.

FELONY NARCOTICS ARREST

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers with the Union Police Department were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at the intersection of North Street and West Jackson Road when they made contact with the driver of a black 2017 Chevrolet Impala.

During the encounter, officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. Investigator Joshua Grimes assisted Officers James Leach and Tyler Cook with the search.
The search resulted in the seizure of approximately:

14.6 grams of ma*****na
1.6 grams of crack co***ne
2.2 grams of powder co***ne
1 Pill of suspected M**A (ecstasy)

The driver was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Newton County Jail. The individual has been charged with Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. The suspect's identity is being withheld at this time pending the next stage of the judicial process.

The Union Police Department remains committed to proactively enforcing drug laws and protecting the safety of our community. We appreciate the continued support of our citizens as we work to keep illegal narcotics out of our neighborhoods.

As always, all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

🦅 It's a bird! ✈️ It's a plane! 🚁 It's a power company inspection drone!

That's right, everyone. Over the next several days, Mississippi Power and its contractors will be conducting post-storm damage assessments and maintenance inspections on power lines and electrical infrastructure throughout our area.

As part of these operations, crews will be utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones. These are large commercial-grade aircraft used to safely inspect utility equipment that may be difficult or hazardous to access by other means.

During these inspections, drones may occasionally cross property boundaries or briefly enter airspace above private property while following utility lines and related infrastructure. This activity is normal and authorized as part of the inspection process.

Please do not be alarmed if you see these drones operating in your area, and please do not interfere with, attempt to tamper with, or otherwise disrupt the equipment or personnel conducting these inspections.

For most residents, these operations will be brief and may not even be noticeable. However, if you happen to see one of the drones at work, simply let it do its job and continue about your day.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as crews work to ensure our electrical infrastructure remains safe and reliable.

Thanks to invaluable input from the community and the assistance of the Neshoba County Sheriff's Office, we have identified the vehicle in question. We thank everyone who came forward with information regarding this incident and assure everyone that charges will be forthcoming.

The City of Union Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying individuals connected to a Commercial Burglary that occurred at Griffin’s Auto on North Street in Union on the evening of March 29, 2026.

The vehicle pictured above—a 2013–2020 Nissan Pathfinder—is believed to be involved in this incident.

If you recognize this vehicle or have any information regarding its occupants, please contact the City of Union Police Department at your earliest convenience.
