Before I say what is on my heart, I am reminded that yesterday was the National Day of Prayer — a day that calls us not only to pray for our nation, but also for wisdom, humility, and unity.
As the political season intensifies with endless ads, accusations, and noise, my prayer is simple: that after the votes are cast, our nation, our Commonwealth, and our Grand Old Party will come back together united — respecting both the process and the people.
I say this as someone whose roots in Kentucky run deep. I am a Kentuckian by heritage and by heart. My great-great-grandfathers were granted land in what was then the Kentucky County of Virginia for their service in the Revolutionary War. They were patriots — and that spirit still lives in the people of this Commonwealth.
Kentuckians are thoughtful, independent, faithful people. They listen carefully. They weigh issues seriously. And while they deeply respect leaders — including our President of the United States — they are not easily swayed by endorsements, political pressure, or power from Washington. Kentuckians vote their conscience.
Kentuckians vote their convictions. We vote with both heart and mind.
Columnist Al Cross recently wrote:
“Call me crazy, but I still think Kentuckians want senators and representatives, not rubber stamps.”
I believe Mr. Cross is right.
Respectfully, Kentucky voters deserve more credit than many political pundits and operatives give them. Our people think for themselves. They value strength, faith, integrity, and authenticity. And in the end, they will choose the men and women they believe will best serve Kentucky — not simply serve a political machine.
That is not disrespect toward any leader, including President Trump, whom many Kentuckians greatly admire. It is, instead, a testament to the independent spirit of the Commonwealth itself.
And honestly, that independent spirit is part of what makes Kentucky so special.
