April is a month designated for raising awareness of child abuseto prevention. As a society we all agree children should be safe in their homes and in their communities. Child Welfare, CYS, is the agency by law to investigate allegations of abuse and neglect. Over this month we will make efforts to break down what that means and what the community at large can do to assure that children have their basic needs met and that they are safe. Look for our daily post to discribe what happens thorough the child welfare system. What can we do and what can't we do?

How does CYS get involved with a family?
Someone needs to make a report. The law identifies individuals that come in contact with children through work or volunteer involvement as mandated reporters. However, it is important to understand that anyone can make a report if they suspect child abuse or neglect. This is called permissive reporting. As a permissive reporter you do not have to leave your name if you choose. The agency is not permitted to release any information regarding our reporting source to anyone other than law enforcemnt and the DA in certain circumstances.
Mandated reporters do not have to have first hand knowledge of abuse or neglect and the information can be given to them through a third party.

Reports can be made in several ways. A person may call ChildLine, the state hotline at 1 800-932-0313 or the county agency where the abuse occurs. For Fayette County the 24 hour number is 724 430-1287. A person can submit a report on line by going to https://www.compass.dhs.pa.gov/cwis

To make a report their must be information that leads to a specific allegation of abuse or neglect as defined by the law. We will discuss that in our next post.

Our service provides a means for individuals to apply for PA Child Abuse History Clearance online and for mandated reporters to report child abuse in Pennsylvania.

As reports emerge about disturbing events within a local high school, a common reaction in online comments has been the question: “Why didn’t they say something sooner?”

Crime Victims' Center provides education, advocacy, and support for survivors. If you or someone you know needs help or someone to talk to, we are available 24/7 at 724-437-3737.

Why do some survivors of sexual abuse wait to report?

There are many reasons—and none of them mean the abuse didn’t happen.

Fear is often at the center. Fear of not being believed. Fear of retaliation. Fear of facing the person who harmed them—especially when it’s someone they know, trust, or depend on.

Shame and self-blame can be overwhelming. Many survivors are manipulated into thinking it was their fault or that they somehow “allowed” it to happen.

Trauma also impacts the brain. Survivors may dissociate, suppress memories, or struggle to process what happened for months or even years.

Some worry about the consequences reporting may bring—family disruption, community judgment, or involvement in the legal system.

Others simply aren’t ready. Healing and disclosure happen on a survivor’s timeline—not anyone else’s.

Delayed reporting is common. It is valid. And it does not diminish the truth.

Let’s replace judgment with understanding. Let’s listen, support, and believe survivors.

On this week’s update of “Fionna’s Patriotic Adventure™”, Fionna Fayette™ decided to Discover Fayette PA by visiting Mount Washington Tavern with Fort Necessity National Battlefield.

While at Mount Washington's Tavern Fionna thought that it would be a great place to stop for lunch. While she was here, she learned that this Tavern was built in the 1830's as a place for travelers to stop to relax on their travels. Each traveler had to wait for the dinner bell to be rung before entering into the dining room for dinner. There was even bedrooms upstairs incase travelers needed to stay overnight.

Be sure to look for our next adventure in Fayette County, PA.
