Today, the Fayette County Recorder of Deeds Office proudly recognizes National Airborne Day and the brave men and women who have served in America’s airborne forces.

National Airborne Day commemorates August 16, 1940, when the U.S. Army conducted its first official parachute jump at Fort Benning, Georgia. Since then, generations of paratroopers have answered the call, jumping into uncertainty and danger in defense of our nation.

From the battlefields of World War II to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and missions around the world, America’s airborne forces have built a proud legacy of courage, determination, and service.

Today, we salute all past and present paratroopers, especially those from Fayette County who have worn the uniform and earned their wings.

Copying the Recorder of Deeds Office does not replace submission of a Right-to-Know request to the County’s designated Open Records Officer and does not alter any requirements, procedures, or deadlines established by Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know Law.

Today we recognize Agent Orange Awareness Day and honor the veterans who continue to carry the invisible wounds of war.

For many Vietnam-era veterans, the battle did not end when they returned home. Exposure to Agent Orange has been linked to numerous serious health conditions, including certain cancers, Parkinson’s disease, ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, and other illnesses recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Fayette County Recorder of Deeds Office proudly honors the sacrifices of these veterans and remains committed to preserving their military service by recording DD-214 discharge papers at no cost. Safely recording this important document can help veterans and their families access benefits when they are needed.

If you are a veteran who believes you were exposed to Agent Orange, or a surviving family member seeking benefits, assistance is available. Accredited Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) can help you file a VA disability compensation claim or apply for survivor benefits at no cost. You can contact:

* Your Fayette County Director of Veterans Affairs
* The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs
* Accredited organizations such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), or Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA)

These organizations can help gather the necessary records, complete your application, and guide you through the VA claims process.

The war may be over, but for many, the battle continues. Today, we honor their sacrifice, remember their service, and stand with those still fighting the lasting effects of Agent Orange.

Today we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of America’s Purple Heart recipients.

On National Purple Heart Day, the Fayette County Recorder of Deeds Office pays tribute to the brave service members who were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. The Purple Heart is a symbol of extraordinary courage and a reminder of the tremendous cost of our freedoms.

We are deeply grateful to every Purple Heart recipient and to their families, whose strength and sacrifice have helped preserve the liberties we enjoy today. Your service will never be forgotten.

As part of our commitment to those who have served, the Fayette County Recorder of Deeds Office proudly records military discharge papers (DD-214s) at no cost and offers the Fayette County Veteran ID Card Program, connecting local veterans with discounts from participating businesses throughout the county.

Today, we pause to remember, reflect, and say thank you to our Purple Heart heroes.

Today, we proudly recognize the 236th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard!

Since August 4, 1790, the United States Coast Guard has safeguarded our nation’s waters, protected our ports, rescued those in distress, enforced our maritime laws, and stood ready in service to our country during both peace and war.

The Fayette County Recorder of Deeds Office extends our sincere gratitude to the brave men and women of the Coast Guard, past and present, for their unwavering commitment, courage, and sacrifice. Your dedication protects lives, secures our nation’s commerce, and strengthens America’s security every day.

As we honor the Coast Guard’s remarkable 236 years of service, we also remember the veterans who have worn the Coast Guard uniform. If you are a Fayette County veteran, we encourage you to record your DD-214 with our office at no cost and take advantage of the free Fayette County Veteran ID Card Program, which provides access to discounts from participating local businesses.

Disability does not define someone’s value, potential, or ability to make a difference. When we choose understanding over assumptions, we create stronger, more welcoming communities where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Let us celebrate the unique abilities, perspectives, and accomplishments of people with disabilities, not only during July, but throughout the entire year.

🚨 Air Quality Alert for Fayette County 🚨

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Purple (Very Unhealthy) Air Quality Alert for our area due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Current conditions in Uniontown have reached an AQI of 254, which falls within the Very Unhealthy category.

What this means:

• Everyone should limit time outdoors.
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities such as running, heavy yard work, or prolonged exercise.
• Children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with heart or lung disease should remain indoors as much as possible.
• If you must be outside, keep activities brief and watch for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or irritated eyes.

The alert remains in effect through midnight tonight, with air quality expected to improve tomorrow.

Please check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone with respiratory conditions. Check air quality at www.airnow.gov and follow Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for updates.

Today, we recognize the important role cows and agriculture play in our community and how our office helps protect the land they call home.

At the Fayette County Recorder of Deeds, we record and preserve the deeds that document ownership of farmland across our county. These records ensure that farms, pastures, and the land that supports our local cattle and dairy industries are properly documented for generations to come.

From grazing fields to family farms, every parcel has a history and we’re proud to help keep those stories safe and accessible.
