🔥 MARCH IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH 🔥

Most house fires start in the kitchen.
Most deaths happen because of smoke.

And most of them?
Preventable.

It doesn’t start with a disaster.
It starts with:

⚠️ Unattended cooking
⚡ Overloaded outlets
🔥 Faulty wiring
🕯 Careless open flames

Smoke is the #1 killer in fires.
Not the flames.

That’s why this month matters.

✔ Test your smoke alarms
✔ Never leave cooking unattended
✔ Check electrical wiring
✔ Have an escape plan

Fire doubles in size within minutes.
Preparation takes seconds.

This March — don’t ignore fire safety.
Talk about it at home.
Practice it.
Live it.

Because prevention protects families. 🚒🔥

The Unionville Fire Department has had a busy last couple of months!
Despite some administrative challenges within the department, our members have continued to step up, stay focused, and give their very best to serve our community — both on emergency scenes and in training. We couldn’t be more proud of their dedication and professionalism.
🚒 Training Highlights- Our members recently completed ventilation training using our very own roof prop, which simulates cutting and venting a roof during a structure fire. Realistic training like this ensures we are prepared when seconds matter most.
We also conducted a landing zone refresher, reviewing how to properly set up a safe helicopter landing zone and ensuring everyone understands what critical information must be communicated to the pilot. Preparation and clear communication are key to patient safety.
❤️ Medical Response & CPR Renewals- Our members renewed their CPR certifications and continue to respond to all cardiac arrests in our area to provide rapid care and extra hands for the ambulance crew.
As a licensed rescue department, we have medically licensed personnel and licensed rescue trucks equipped with advanced medical equipment. This allows us to:
-Provide enhanced care on scene
-Respond to medical emergencies when ACW is already committed
-Deliver patient care until the next closest ambulance arrives
This level of capability helps ensure our community receives the fastest and most effective care possible.
💙 Community Involvement- Several members attended the Project Blue Light ceremony to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. We were honored to receive a Christmas wreath in appreciation of our continued support of our law enforcement partners.
One of our members also participated in the Annual Guns and Hoses Hockey Game at the Dow Event Center, where police officers and firefighters face off to raise funds for “Carter Kits.” These kits are carried on our trucks and contain items to help calm children and individuals with special needs during emergency situations. It’s a cause we are proud to support.
🌊 Equipment Updates- We recently purchased new water rescue helmets equipped with lights to improve visibility and tracking during operations. This enhances safety for our rescuers — and ultimately for the community we serve.
We also received a “new-to-us” boat courtesy of the DNR. While the boat remains DNR-owned, we will house and utilize it for water emergencies. We are grateful for this partnership and for the additional resource to better serve our community.
📊 Call Volume Update- We’re a little late in sharing, but in 2025 we responded to 107 calls for service. While not a record-breaking year, it continues the trend of increasing call volume year after year.
So far in 2026, we have already responded to 17 calls for service — and we’re only getting started.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community in its various times of need. In 2026, we look forward to continuing to upgrade equipment, expand training, and improve our capabilities to better protect and serve.
Thank you for your continued support of the Unionville Fire Department. 🚒🔥

Unionville Fire Department Press Release
Date: February 10, 2026
Time: 7:39 a.m.

At 7:39 a.m. on February 10, 2026, the Unionville Fire Department was dispatched to Thomas Road in Akron Township for a reported ice rescue on Saginaw Bay.

A fisherman traveling on the ice approximately one mile from shore rolled his four-wheeler while heading out onto the bay. Initial reports indicated the operator may have been unconscious. Unionville Fire responded by deploying its Ice Rescue Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC), along with appropriate ice rescue personal protective equipment, medical supplies, and trained personnel.

The patient was able to fire a flare into the air, which assisted responders in narrowing down his location. Upon making contact, Unionville Fire medical personnel conducted a rapid patient evaluation. The individual was properly packaged to prevent further injury, loaded onto the RDC, and transported safely back to shore.

Once on shore, the patient was transferred to ACW Ambulance and MMR personnel and transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Unionville Fire was assisted on scene by Acw Ambulance , MMR, Michigan State Police, the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office, and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.

Special thanks to the firefighters who are not only ice rescue certified but also medically trained, allowing them to provide critical patient care while operating in hazardous ice conditions and safely transporting the patient to shore.

The Unionville Fire Department reminds all anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to use extreme caution when traveling on ice and to always be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
