A Montgomery County man has been sentenced to 36 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to a stolen vehicle that ended with a foot chase and arrest in Harrison Township.

On June 17, 2026, William Wax was sentenced after pleading guilty to Failure to Comply with the Order or Signal of a Police Officer, Receiving Stolen Property, and Aggravated Possession of Drugs.

The charges stem from a February 23, 2026 vehicle theft in Harrison Township. During the investigation, deputies located the stolen Jeep and attempted to stop the vehicle. Wax failed to comply and attempted to flee, striking a marked patrol vehicle and an unoccupied parked vehicle before abandoning the Jeep and fleeing on foot.

After a foot pursuit through nearby business properties, deputies took Wax into custody. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of the victim's driver's license and several credit cards.

"This defendant's actions put members of our community, as well as responding deputies, at risk," said Sheriff Rob Streck. "What began as a vehicle theft escalated into a dangerous attempt to evade law enforcement that resulted in multiple crashes and a foot pursuit. We appreciate the efforts of the deputies involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion."

Wax was sentenced to 36 months in prison in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam targeting members of our community involving fraudulent bond payments. This scheme is designed to trick victims into sending money under false pretenses by exploiting concern for loved ones.

In the latest version of this scam, victims receive a text message or phone call from someone claiming to be with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. The caller or sender claims a friend or family member has been arrested and granted a bond, often using real names to appear credible. In some cases, scammers are targeting individuals they know are currently in custody, using that information to create a false sense of urgency and legitimacy.

The victim is then instructed to send money to help secure their loved one's release. Scammers may direct victims to make a cash deposit at a retail location using a barcode, transfer funds through digital payment services such as PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle, purchase gift cards, or use other electronic payment methods. Once the money is sent, it is typically accessed immediately by the scammer and is often difficult or impossible to recover.

These messages and calls can appear convincing and often create a sense of urgency, pressuring individuals to act quickly without verifying the information. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office does not contact individuals by text message, phone call, email, social media, or digital payment platforms to request bond payments. The Sheriff's Office will never direct residents to send money through retail payment services, gift cards, money transfer services, or peer-to-peer payment applications.

"Scammers are constantly finding new ways to prey on people's trust and fear during difficult times," said Sheriff Streck. "We want every resident to know that our office will never contact you asking for bond money. If you're ever in doubt, contact officials directly."

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and verify any unexpected messages about arrests or bond payments. Never send money or share personal information without confirming through official channels, and report any suspected scams to your local law enforcement agency immediately.
