Featured Project April 2024;
This RC Gorman poster and cookbook came to us from unfortunate circumstances. Mr Mares wanted to have the cookbook and poster framed as a memorial to his recently deceased wife of many years, who loved Gorman’s work, knew him and had him sign his cook book. We mounted the poster on a red colored board and then mounted the cookbook on top of the poster. The inside of the frame is lined with the red colored board creating a spacer that shadowboxes the package inside of a contemporary black frame The over all affect of the work is one of cheerful celebration of life and a fitting memorial for a life well lived.

Thank You Mr. Mares.

Featured Project March 2024 Hammered Tin Milagro.
As a gift to a long to term employee, Sarah Heartt from the LaFarge Foundation of Latin American Folk Art brought this Milagro to us for framing. Sarah wanted a very nice presentation to honor their Foundation Secretary for his many years of service to be presented to him at his retirement reception. Sarah chose a dark blue satin reverse for the float board behind the piece with an elevated mat wrapped in a dark green variegated colored silk and a brushed silver fillit to accent the inside edge of the mat. A second window was made for a brushed pewter engraved plaque that was backed with black mat board. The brushed contemporary silver frame was the finishing touch. The piece looks wonderful. What a nice way to say Thank you.

and Thank You Sarah Heartt.

Featured Project, February 2024: Local architect James Horn won the 2023 New Mexico AIA medal for excellence and he brought it to us with the certificate for framing! James wanted to be able to easily access the bronze medallion to wear at AIA professional events and asked us to create a design from which the medallion could be easily removed from the box and easily placed back into the box. We made a double opening mat and placed the certificate into the certificate window as we would normally do, but the opening for the medallion was shadowboxed and a second smaller box made to house the medallion. The medallion box is hand cut with a circular opening the size of the medallion itself then the entire inside of the medallion box was lined with red pongee silk to match the color of the red print on the certificate. The fabric gave the circular opening a little bit of cush to snug the medallion in place. The medallion box was made to fit inside the shadow box snugly so that it could be removed from the back simply by pulling on a paper tab. We secured the neck ribbon on the back with a couple of turn buckles. The turn buckles were a simple but effective solution to securing the ribbon on the backside of the box to maintain some tension on the visible part of the ribbon.

Thanks James and Congratulations on your accomplishments.

Featured Project January 2024:
Opulent describes these sets of lovely East Indian miniatures that were brought to us by enthusiastic world traveler and collector of international folk art Barbara S. The pieces in the top picture pane are miniatures painted on camel bone that are hand carved with intricate scroll patterns. We top mounted the pieces onto a gold foil mat board that shows through the carved patterns. We then matted around the pieces with a green silk pongee and lined the inner edge of the mat with a gold fillit. Barbara chose a dark natural wood for the frame that shows off all of the rich colors. The second set of miniatures are paintings on paper depicting some of India’s famous fauna. We designed a mat using a light green silk pongee and a gold fillit for each window and framed them with an ornate Empire style gold frame lending a period feeling to the presentation as well as reflecting the ornate quality of the paintings. The framed set literally glows! The pieces had writing on the back that Barbara wanted to see so we cut windows in the back to show the writing. The windows in the back are covered in acetate to seal them up. It was more than a pleasure working on such beautiful pieces. Thank you Barbara S.

We had the great honor to frame a collection of Oregon Ducks sports memorabilia brought to us by former Oregon Ducks star athlete Christine Mintz. Christine envisioned the pieces top mounted onto a soft white mat board with a natural wood frame. After some consultation and looking at various designs, Christine chose a natural colored mat board and the team colors of yellow and kelly green used to accent the window openings and background. For the frame she chose a natural walnut that we hand finished with dark walnut stain and sealed with dark wax to give the wood a silky sheen. The frame moulding had 2 inches of depth on the inside to accommodate the thickness of the objects including an Oregon Ducks toilet seat! We created a multi-layered presentation with some of the objects set back from the surface of the mat, some of the objects top mounted to the surface of the mat and some of the objects elevated above the surface of the mat creating a multi-dimensional 3-D affect. What a fantastic job! Thank you Christine Mintz!

Simple elegance graces this Anne Menke large format silver gelatin print. The client wanted a presentation that melded seamlessly with the tonality of the image. We chose an understated warm silver frame with gold highlights that reflected the clean lines and broad planes of gray that define the image. The image was delivered to us in a large shipping tube and consequently had a lot of resistance to flattening. We enlisted the help of Visions Photo Lab who mounted the photo onto die bond. The finished mounted photo measured 55 inches in height and 45 inches in width. The client wanted the image framed without glazing lending the image visual immediacy that is sometimes lost when glass is placed in front of art work. The finished piece now hangs in a very prominent place in the clients home. Thanks Jill for this wonderful job.

FEATURED PROJECT OCTOBER 2023 This beautiful hand sewn quilted tapestry was brought to us for framing by fabric artist Pattibear Acuna. Measuring 54 inches x 26 inches the piece commemorates a dramatic moment from the artists life when a boat she was in capsized threatening the lives of the artist and her companions.

Pattibear envisioned a presentation for the piece that reflected the importance of the work and it’s relevance to her experience. She chose an elegant and powerful gold frame with a wave pattern reflecting the wave imagery in the artwork. The result is a presentation that conveys a sense of reverence, like that of a holy icon that one might find in a temple or sanctuary.

The mounting of the work required some special attention. To create an archival presentation we started with a stretcher bar sealed with multiple coats of gesso too keep acids in the wood safely away from the artwork. Before stretching the work onto the stretcher bar a piece of unbleached and washed 100 percent cotton muslin fabric was sewn onto the back of the work. Cotton muslin is acid free and will not affect the artwork over time and the muslin protects the back side of the artwork from insects. After the piece was stretched, before fitting it into the frame, the inside of the frame was lined with archival framers sealing tape to keep the wood acid from the frame from touching the sidewall of the stretched artwork and an archival gasket was run around the lip of the frame to provide a seal for the glass to keep insects from entering the frame from the front . A piece of conservation glass was fit into the frame and an archival spacer was fit to the edge of the glass to keep the glass from touching the artwork. The artwork was secured into the frame with offsets and the back of the frame left open to allow the fabric to breath… thus the importance of sewing muslin onto the back of the artwork. The finished presentation is stunning to look at and the work preserved to see it safely into the future to be enjoyed for many years to come. Thank you Pattibear Acuna.

This work by Joseph Begay presented some challenges for construction as well as aesthetics. Because the piece is unique, old, valuable and very fragile the client wanted us to take special care and attach the piece into the frame without the use of adhesives or hardware attached directly to the work. We have handled works like this before. Sometimes it’s possible to use hardware like plate hangers or L hooks to clamp pieces in place but in this situation we opted for a sturdy monofilament thread to sew the piece onto the backing. We used tack stitches that tied off on the back side of the fabric float board. The stitches were placed discreetly and hidden behind parts of the construction so that they would not be visible . The client chose a neutral colored linen for the backing and we shadowboxed the work with 1 1/2 inch linen covered spacers which gave the inside of the box a very cushy look befitting the color and age of the piece. After some discussion about the color of the frame, the client liked the idea of painting the frame to match the blue color the artist used in the work. After starting to paint the frame it became evident that if the entire frame were to be painted blue, the color would compete with the artwork. Ultimately we painted the face of the frame blue as originally discussed but painted the sidewalls of the frame a light taupe to match another color that the artist had used. The colors matched the piece so well that the frame in essence became an extension of the artwork. The client loved it! Thank you Amy A.
