Op-Ed: Referendum results show Chicago wants treatment, not trauma - Chicago Reader

The referendum results favored "Treatment Not Trauma, a model for public mental health infrastructure that would include city-run mental health centers and a 24-hour crisis response hotline that would dispatch mental health workers instead of police officers." https://chicagoreader.com/commentary/op-ed-referendum-results-show-chicago-wants-treatment-not-trauma/

In the midterm, communities voiced overwhelming support for public mental health centers and crisis responses that don’t involve police.

What does it take to build a Chicago that is responsive and accountable to communities of color?

At Chicago United for Equity, we believe answering this question takes courage, collaboration, and building collectively to support community self-determination.

Every year, CUE Fellows, facilitators, and documenters work together to bring community-led policymaking to life. We're currently recruiting for the 2021 Fellowship and growing our squad. Join us by May 6th!

"Young people- Tell us what you need from us. Thank you, young people, for your outrage. Thank you for understanding that grants and “relationships” with the city will not save you. They won’t save us."

Adam Toledo attended Gary Elementary, the school my husband attended. Last week, the simple question, "What additional resources is Gary Elementary receiving after the killing of Adam?" was met with, "Well, we don't know. We'll get back to you."

Thanks to Amalia Nieto-Gomez of Alliance of the Southeast who presented to our fellowship class (and with whose organization FOTP has been deeply engaged through the TIF REIA process and other spaces) for her and her organizational members' contribution to this work and article and to Gavin Taves for getting Illinois Environmental Council more plugged into this work fighting for environmental justice on the Southeast Side. And to Leslie for funding from Conant Family Foundation! Go team!
This (link: https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoCodeBlue/videos/1003012536787844/ ) is all over the news now, how this "good girl" horribly harassed the police...swearing every other sentence. Half of what she was screaming was inaudible. If I were a cop, my patience would have ended within 30 seconds. If cops are sooo bad, why would people like her provoke them so much?? It seems she would NOT stop until it got really bad. Yes, I agree black issues matter, but so does acting like a civil human being. This vid looks very bad for her. Does anyone think her behavior was positive, or helpful?

**Full disclosure, I founded both TGF & Flynn Gordon Law after working in child welfare for 17 years & finding our public systems to be insufficient. This training is one way we're continuing to fight for equity & antiracism.
If you are fighting for equity then we invite you to review and sign our petition to abolish TIFs at

There is an assault on Democracy happening right now in a small town in Illinois. The South Berwyn Community is fighting for their right to a majority vote and funding for 8 public schools, 6 elementary and 2 middle schools. In April of 2017 this community voted to pass a referendum to raise the limiting rate by 4.195% of the estimated assessed values of our property to fund our severely underfunded school district and save 2 of our elementary schools from closing. Since that referendum passed the minority of citizens who voted against the referendum have gotten loud and insistent. So much so that our own Board of Education who fought for this referendum is considering giving up a portion of it and reduce funding for our schools that are still underfunded. Our district is the 6th lowest funded in Illinois. In addition to that threat to our children’s education, Lisa Hernandez, our State Representative has proposed a bill that would reverse the referendum that was just passed by a majority vote. If this bill passes, it sets a dangerous precedent that a State Representative can overturn a majority vote. This is worse than voter suppression or vote tampering, this is a direct violation of our democratic rights to a majority rule. This time it's a referendum to fund a severely underfunded school district, next time it might be LGBTQ rights, Medicare or Minimum Wage Increases. If you are a registered voter living in the United States take a minute to sign this witness slip in opposition of this bill HB5975 and it’s amendment and then share this post. The hearing is tomorrow morning, we must stop this if we are to protect our right to a majority vote. Let our government know that we are the People and that Our Vote Counts.
