There’s still time for a fall hike, but getting to the trailhead may look different as the season winds down.

Some park access roads and gates close in early November, and many parks become unstaffed while the trails remain open. Before you go, check the schedule for more info about the park you are planning to visit.

Visit our website for the operating schedules and more information:

It’s that time of year when we close the Sherman Adams Building at the summit of Mount Washington for the winter season. Hikers should take note that services, restrooms, or shelter are no longer available and should plan accordingly.

While the building at the top may be closed, our partners at the Mount Washington Auto Road and Cog Railway still offer trips up the mountain, weather depending. Please visit their pages for details: Mt. Washington Auto Road & Mount Washington Cog Railway

Some of the best foliage is explored on two wheels.

Our statewide multi-use trail system offers rides for all skill levels, from technical mountain biking to family-friendly rail trails.

Before you head out, keep a few fall riding tips in mind:

🍂Watch for wet leaves, which can make the trail slippery and hide obstacles like roots and rocks
⏱️Plan your route with shorter daylight hours in mind
🌧️Check trail conditions and give muddy trails time to dry

Visit our website for more trail information:

Last call for camping under the foliage!

Many of our campgrounds are open through Oct. 24, so there’s still time for another day of leaf-crunching hikes, another night spent around a crackling fire and another morning of warm coffee and misty mountain views.

Peak fall colors are reaching the Monadnock Region, and Mount Monadnock is one of the best places to see them.

It’s our busiest time of the year, and that means the park will reach capacity. Secure your spot by making a reservation online at the link below or by calling (877) 647-2757.

Once you’ve made your reservation, make sure you’re prepared for the hike. Mount Monadnock’s trails are steep and rocky, and fall conditions can change quickly throughout the day.

🌦️Bring layers and rain gear
🍎 Pack plenty of water and snacks
🥾Wear sturdy hiking shoes
🍂Watch your footing on the way down. Fallen leaves, acorns and wet rocks can be slippery.

And just a reminder, pets are not allowed at Mount Monadnock. Miller State Park is a great pet-friendly alternative for your four-legged friends to enjoy the views (and all the sniffs).

Planning to hike in Franconia Notch this weekend? There are a few things you should be aware of:
- The Falling Waters Trail has been improved and re-routed (see the WMNF post below) or visit our website for more details:
https://www.nhstateparks.org/find-parks-trails/find-a-trail
- Trailhead parking lots for the Franconia Ridge Loop were filled BEFORE 6am last weekend!
- The Franconia Notch State Park Shuttle that runs from Exit 34B to handle overflow from those lots, stopped taking hikers between 9am - 10am due to capacity.
- We suggest planning ahead, arriving early or considering one of the many other amazing State Park properties that offer hiking:

TRAIL UPDATE: The Appalachian Mountain Club in partnership with the White Mountain National Forest has opened the newly realigned section of the iconic Falling Waters Trail.

While generations of hikers have loved Falling Waters, parts of the old route have become steep, eroded, and increasingly difficult to navigate safely. This has resulted in numerous search and rescue responses over the years. The new alignment follows a more gradual route through open forest, while a spur trail preserves access to Cloudland Falls.

After two years of work, and thousands of hours, this essential work to ensure the long-term viability of the trail and the greater Franconia Ridge Loop access has resulted in a continuation of reliable access to recreation opportunities.

Hikers should adhere to all trail signage and closures relating to the decommissioned section of the Falling Waters Trail. The old section of trail has been decommissioned and naturalized to allow natural revegetation to occur. The new trail alignment may not be accurate on online mapping platforms and adherence to all signage and trail markings is crucial for hiker safety.

For questions, please contact the Pemigewasset Ranger District at (603) 536-6100 x 0.
