It's Myth Buster Monday!

MLO Myth #5: “D51 already has enough MLOs.”

D51 has three MLOs. They generate about $883 per student. The number of MLOs alone doesn’t tell the whole story. It is more important to ask what each MLO funds, what needs it addresses, and whether those needs are ongoing.

We encourage you to look beyond the number and understand what the funding actually supports. This MLO supports safer schools, stronger futures, and valuing our teachers.

Sample Ballot: If you do anything for us this election, would you please share this specific image?
Here's a look at the sample ballot. As you can see, it's LONG and hard to read. We've broken it down and you can see each of the important pieces to this language.

Through 4a, D51 is addressing and expanding what business owners in Mesa County have shared worry them the most: having a solid employee pool. With 609 Industry Credentials earned in 2026, we can't even imagine the number of credentials will be earned by D51 students with the money from 4A. Our economy, business owners, and people of Mesa County need a thriving workforce, and D51 is working to make that happen. Vote yes on 4a.

These are just a few of the wonderful celebrations that D51 has achieved over the last few years. D51 has done more with less. These celebrations are just a small example of the hard work our teachers, staff, and families put into D51 to do more for our students; even when the funding isn't keeping pace. That's why we're asking for an MLO this year. There's room to grow and D51 has proved it can manage its resources and set students up for success beyond graduation. Vote YES on 4a for strong schools and strong futures.

Chamber Position: SUPPORT
A skilled workforce is essential to the success of our local businesses. The District 51 mill levy override supports that foundation through career and technical education, competitive teacher compensation, and safe learning environments.
Our Board carefully weighed these priorities against the additional property taxes employers would pay at a time when business costs continue to rise. The Chamber rarely supports measures that add costs for businesses, and this decision was not taken lightly.
The District's efforts in recent years to trim administrative costs, support teachers, and invest in curriculum that connects students with career exploration were central to the Board's support.
Addressing our skilled workforce shortage requires continued commitment to the programs and people preparing students for local careers. The Chamber supports this measure because maintaining CTE opportunities, supporting competitive wages for teachers, and protecting school safety are essential to building the workforce our business community needs.

"I don’t endorse new local funding lightly. But I know the limits of what the state can deliver. School funding competes with Medicaid growth, constitutional revenue limits and many other obligations. State dollars alone will not close the gap between what D51 receives and what it takes to keep great teachers, maintain safe schools and prepare students for life after graduation.
A local override fills that gap and the dollars stay here. They are raised in Mesa County, spent in Mesa County and overseen by people who live here. When state funding is stretched, local dollars go further because they target needs our own community has identified.
D51 has also earned trust with public money. The district has stretched every dollar further while posting higher graduation rates and enrolling more students in workforce readiness programs. A community should invest where it sees results.
Every request for more money deserves scrutiny, especially when families are feeling the cost of living. When I weigh this measure, I come back to a simple truth. Strong schools support strong families, a skilled workforce and a healthy economy.
I’ll keep fighting at the Capitol for Western Slope schools. But the state cannot fill this gap alone. Please join me in voting yes on the D51 mill levy override."
