We’ve entered flood season in Snohomish County. No flood watches or warnings are in effect, but history shows this is the time of year to begin paying particular attention to what’s happening with area rivers.

We worked with partners to publish a collection of flood-related resources that should help you prepare: https://www.snohomishcountywa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/152319/2026-Flood-Resources-Press-Release

When flooding is in the forecast, visit the flood page on the Snohomish County Public Safety Hub for updates and quick access to real-time river gauges, interactive maps, alerts and other tools. https://bit.ly/snocoflooding

Recently, the Health Department and County Human Services hosted a moving event to remember the painful experiences of Indigenous children who were removed from their families and placed in boarding and industrial schools. “Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters,” started in Canada to raise awareness of the past injustices of this horrific history, its present day impacts, and support healing and reconciliation.

Our department staff, along with other county workers and members of the indigenous community, took a short walk from the county's Campus Plaza to our auditorium for a commemoration event in honor the survivors of these schools, their families and the many children that never made it home. The event included powerful storytelling by Coast Salish Cultural Educator Pamela SeaMonster and songs by Native Grammy singer and Indigenous wellness advocate Star Nayea.

In the time after the "Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters" event, we continue to learn, support healing, and remember those impacted. We encourage you to learn more about "Orange Shirt Day-Every Child Matters" here: https://orangeshirtday.org/about/phyllis-story/
