200 years ago this was the first company to do business in Ogden Valley. In 1825, Hudson’s Bay Company was already a century and a half old. The HBC employed thousands of families over multiple generations- trappers, traders, explorers, voyagers; blazing trails, and navigating the waterways of the North American continent.

One of the oldest names in North American business has officially shut its doors. The Hudson’s Bay Company, known to many Canadians simply as “The Bay,” has declared bankruptcy, bringing a close to a staggering 355-year run. Founded in 1670 as a fur trading empire, HBC predates the United Stat...

THE EVENT THAT FIXED THE NAME OF OGDEN AND WEBER TO THE LANDSCAPE OF NORTHERN UTAH HISTORY! SEE EVENT INFO BELOW!
The news of what took place on the Weber River, May 23 and 24th of 1825, between the Hudson's Bay Company fur trapping brigade of Peter Skene Ogden and the American trappers of John Weber sent a seismic shock wave through the fur trade of the Rocky Mountains and beyond - a territorial dispute, narrowly escaping bloodshed, resulting in the desertion of most of Ogden's trappers to the Americans. The headline news of this incident, and the details of who, where, when, and why involved, dominated the late night campfire conversations of the first of 15 famed Rocky Mountain rendezvous held along Henry’s Fork River near McKinnon, Wyoming. At that historic rendezvous in July of 1825, the names of the Weber River, Ogden River and Ogden’s Hole we’re here to stay, affixed to the landscape of Northern Utah geography. It was only a matter of time until other Ogden and Weber namesakes like Weber County, South Weber City, Ogden City, Mount Ogden, South Ogden and North Ogden followed.
Join us for a 200 year commemoration on the Weber River where this landmark event took place, setting our local history in motion!

HAVING SOME FUN AT THE OGDEN MARATHON!
6,500 marathon and half marathon runners got an unexpected and memorable lesson in history! Beginning with the start of the race, the past and present merged as marathon participants retraced much of Peter Skene Ogden's course through scenic Ogden Valley 200 years ago.....to the day, May 17, 1825.

OGDEN VALLEY — Before the starting gun sent some 6,500 competitors out into the Ogden Valley for the 24th annual Ogden Marathon on Saturday, a different kind of blast marked the 200th anniversary of fur trapper and explorer Peter Skene Ogden’s May 1825 arrival in the area along with his troop fr...

REMEMBERING AN OGDEN VALLEY LONG GONE
This beautiful painting (1976) by Dale W. Byrner depicts Shoshone hunters stalking elk in the pristine Ogden Valley of 200 years ago. To the Shoshone, this was their prized summering grounds – Anga-we-ya-dye, 'where the red berries grow', a place of seclusion and refuge. To Peter Skene Ogden and the mountain men trappers who would follow, it was 'Ogden's Hole', teeming with beaver, a place of mystery and discovery.

Residents of Ogden Valley today will easily recognize the silhouette of future Mount Ogden looming high on the distant right horizon. In 2025, the pastoral vistas of this painting have all but vanished, now punctuated with roads, ski runs and luxury vacation homes. Enjoy this glimpse into what once was.
