Our always-busy Office of Audit has initiated two new projects and would like to receive any relevant information about either or both:

 Determining whether the process for maintaining delivery points and other route information in the Address Management System is timely and accurate.

 Evaluating a) USPS data models used to determine sites for conversion of small facilities into larger regional hubs, b) cost/savings impacts associated with the conversions, and c) how those plans were communicated externally and internally.

How is mail service doing in Alaska? Alaska has a scattered population across its large geography; therefore, the Postal Service uses air carriers to deliver mail to a lot of the communities in the state that are not accessible by road.

OIG auditors identified deficiencies related to mail movement and to accuracy and timeliness of air carrier payments.

Last January, when implemented its Mail Condition Visualization (MCV) system, it was supposed to save the Postal Service time and money by using machine-reported scans to track and provide real-time visibility. So why are plant managers at certain postal processing facilities still manually counting the amount of delayed mail? Our latest “Pushing the Envelope” blog discusses it here https://go.usa.gov/xetF7
From August 2020 to July 2021, the Baltimore Processing & Distribution Center (P&DC) processed about 1.67 billion mailpieces compared to about 1.74 billion mailpieces during the same period last year — a decrease of about 70 million mailpieces (4 percent). However, during that same period, workhours and overtime at the facility increased by 14.6 and 43.5 percent, respectively. Cue USPSOIG.
