Recognizing Juneteenth

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, the day that marks the news of freedom reaching the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.

Juneteenth is an important part of our nation’s history and serves as a reminder of the enduring value of freedom. It is a day to reflect on the past, appreciate the progress that has been made, and honor the resilience of those who persevered through difficult times.

The Pickens Sheriff’s Office is proud to serve our community and wishes everyone a safe and meaningful Juneteenth.

🚔 GROW Camp Visits the Pickens Sheriff’s Office 🚔

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from GROW Camp to the Pickens Sheriff’s Office!

During their visit, campers got an up-close look at the many responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office and learned how our deputies and staff work every day to serve and protect our community. Students had the opportunity to see some of the equipment and technology we use, learn about different career paths in law enforcement, and gain a better understanding of how we work to keep Pickens safe.

We appreciate the opportunity to spend time with these young leaders and hope their visit provided a fun and educational experience. Thank you to GROW Camp for stopping by and allowing us to share our mission of being Determined to Make a Difference.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT FOR THIS AFTERNOON

The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for heavy rainfall across our area this afternoon and evening. Periods of intense rain could lead to ponding of water on roadways and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

If you encounter water covering a roadway:

🚗 Slow down and use caution
🚫 Never drive through flooded roadways
📞 Report hazardous road conditions to 911 if they pose an immediate danger

Remember: It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle off the roadway.

The Pickens Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor weather conditions and respond to any weather-related emergencies.

Turn around, don’t drown!

🚧 ROUNDABOUT AHEAD 🚧

Construction continues on the new roundabout at Highway 53 and Dragon Drive near Pickens High School. While the project is still underway, this summer presents a great opportunity for parents to help new drivers become familiar with navigating a roundabout before school traffic returns.

If conditions are safe and construction crews are not actively working in the area, consider taking a few practice trips with your student driver. Learning how to properly approach, yield, enter, and exit a roundabout now can help build confidence and improve safety when school starts back.

Remember:
🔹 Slow down as you approach
🔹 Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
🔹 Use your turn signal when exiting
🔹 Stay focused and avoid sudden lane changes

A little practice today can make for a safer commute tomorrow. Drive safely, Pickens!
