Hawaiian Council announced today that the website and vendor application portal are now live for ʻUlu o Lele, the interim marketplace and community gathering space being developed at the former Outlets of Maui site in Lahaina. Applications will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

“Nothing can replace what Lahaina lost but recovery must create real opportunities for families and businesses to move forward,” said Kūhiō Lewis, CEO of Hawaiian Council. “This project is about bringing jobs back, helping local businesses serve their community again and restoring a place for people to gather while the long work of rebuilding continues. With applications now open, we are one important step closer.”

Businesses, nonprofits, cultural practitioners, farmers, food vendors and other prospective participants may review application information and submit an application at www.uluolele.com. Priority will be given to businesses directly impacted by the Aug. 8, 2023 Maui wildfires, or those with a connection to Lahaina. This may include businesses whose storefronts or commercial spaces were damaged or destroyed, as well as business owners whose homes were damaged or lost in the wildfires.

At the same time, all Maui-based businesses are encouraged to apply. The goal is to select the right mix of businesses to serve the community, support Lahaina’s recovery, and help make ʻUlu o Lele a place people want to return.

One property is close to getting the first recovery building permit on the iconic street, while Maui County continues working on ways to make it easier for the many commercial landowners who haven’t even started the permitting process.

Nearly three years after the devastating Maui wildfires, Kimo’s Restaurant is officially on its way home. T S Restaurants has signed a letter of intent to develop a new Kimo’s Restaurant on Front Street, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to return to Lahaina and contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the town’s historic commercial district.

While the company continues to explore possibilities for the original Kimo’s site as redevelopment plans for the makai side of Front Street evolve, T S Restaurants is moving forward with a new Front Street location to ensure Kimo’s returns to the community as quickly as possible. T S Restaurants will partner with longtime Hawaiʻi business leaders Kent Untermann and Mousa Hassan, who are restoring the Chan Wa Building, the future home of Kimo’s.

The announcement marks a homecoming for the restaurant where the T S Restaurants story began. Founded in 1977 by Rob Thibaut and Sandy Saxten, Kimo’s was the very first T S Restaurant, opening at 845 Front Street on the last available waterfront parcel in Old Lahaina Town. Its success laid the foundation for what would become one of Hawaiʻi’s best-known restaurant companies, growing to include iconic destinations such as Duke’s Waikīkī, Leilani’s on the Beach, Hula Grill Kāʻanapali, Duke’s Maui, Keoki’s Paradise, Jake’s Del Mar and others.

Rather than recreate the original restaurant, the new Kimo’s will honor its legacy while embracing a new chapter. Guests can expect the same welcoming atmosphere, familiar menu and signature hospitality that made Kimo’s a Lahaina institution.

Additional project details, including the restaurant’s design, construction timeline and opening plans, will be announced as they become available.

Congratulations to West Maui Sports & Fishing Supply on the grand opening of their new flagship store in Lahaina on Saturday, June 27.

After losing their store in the 2023 wildfire, Katie and Lopaka Wilson never gave up on returning home. In 2024, the LahainaTown Action Committee was proud to nominate them for the Mayor’s Small Business Awards, where they were recognized for their resilience and commitment to our community.

County liquor license holders reminded of June 15 renewal deadline

The County of Maui Department of Liquor Control is reminding liquor license holders that license renewal applications are due by 4 p.m. June 15, 2026. If not renewed by the deadline, current licenses will expire on June 30, 2026.

The Application for Renewal of Liquor License and all required documents must be mailed in or dropped off at the County Department of Liquor Control and must be received and accepted by the department no later than 4 p.m., June 15, 2026.

The department strongly encourages all licensees to submit their renewal applications and all required documents as early as possible. Early submission allows the department time to properly review renewal materials and provides licensees time to make corrections if the application or required documents are incomplete or need revision.
