RPD’s approach to mental health continues to win praise. 🏆

Last week the RPD’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program was awarded Gold Level Certification through CIT International. The Richmond CIT Program reflects a collaboration between the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, Richmond Police Department, VCU Police Department, and the Richmond Sheriff’s Office. CIT is a 40-hour educational program that prepares police officers to handle encounters safely and effectively with people experiencing mental health crises, substance use issues, or developmental disabilities.

There are an estimated 2,700 CIT training programs in the United States. Only twenty-five programs have received this certification through CIT International. Richmond’s program is the first Virginia program to be so recognized. This is a tribute to our supporters and our instructors!
