Even when instructional materials claim to support English Learners, few provide EL-specific supports—even comprehensive programs.
Many materials include general strategies, but stop short of adapting instruction to students’ levels of English proficiency.

💡 What to look for: Instructional materials that adjust language demands by proficiency level, such as flexible text complexity or scaffolded academic vocabulary supports aligned to proficiency levels.

🍎 As the school year begins, it's easy to focus on getting the right lessons and materials in place.

The strongest lessons ask students to think, discuss, write, solve problems, investigate, and apply their learning—not just complete worksheets or watch presentations.

Take another look at your lesson for the first few weeks. Have you planned activities that actively engage students with the content? A small change in what students are asked to do can make a significant difference in what they learn and retain.

Strong implementation starts with clarity.

💡Summer is the ideal time for district and campus leaders to establish the non-negotiables for upcoming instructional materials adoptions. Non-negotiables may include budget, alignment expectations, material format, instructional model, required student supports, and teacher resources.

Establishing these criteria upfront can help narrow the list of materials selection committees will need to review and keep the adoption process focused on district priorities.

Defining clear non-negotiables is one of the steps discussed in Learning List's resource, *Guidance for Selecting or Curating High-Quality Instructional Resources*.
