At the end of March, the Department of Biological Sciences had the opportunity to be part of the largest Brain Night yet! The event has been around for over a decade and attendance on March 26 hit 425, with the largest number of participating groups hitting a new high as well.

During the evening, attendees were able to meet local neuroscientists and interact with hands-on brain and behavior-themed exhibits. Neuroscientists spoke in the NC Museum of Natural Sciences Daily Planet Theater, celebrating the brain and sharing what they have been discovering lately.

Several times a year, the NC State Microbiology Club hosts agar art workshops where students get to “paint with bacteria.” The agar media is the students’ canvas and the bacteria is their paint. For the workshop pictured, students used an engineered bacterium that produces different chromogenic proteins, which allows for different color “paints.” Swipe through to see some of the students' designs!

Students enrolled in ZO 334: Captive Animal Biology Field Laboratory had the opportunity to visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Zoo as part of their coursework this semester.

As part of the experience, the 20 undergraduate and 2 graduate students enrolled were able to learn how to create programs for the general public from museum staff, and participate in learning activities from professionals about the NC State Zoo’s programs.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences high-impact experience is part of a two week learning activity in ZO 334 that occurs in February, while the North Carolina Zoo trip is a 3-day, 2-night trip in March. These events are part of Professor Jennifer Campbell’s class every year.
