Churches Working Together for Bethlehem
Ashtabula area churches are preparing for Christmas already—together. A group is planning a “Bethlehem Experience” event for the public on December 8-9, 2018 5:00-8:30pm. This re-creation of ancient Bethlehem will use the previous Dillard’s location in Ashtabula Towne Square Mall. They meet in Ashtabula County District Library as a neutral location. Volunteers are stepping forward to act as guides, wise men, vendors in the marketplace, Roman soldiers, and much more. Volunteers are still needed for several parts. The free event aims to tell the story of the Nativity of Jesus in a fresh way, as a lived experience. Attendees will even be able to encounter live animals such as a sheep and camel.
“We think the camel will be very memorable for kids. He’s very sweet. It’ll be a big draw,” said organizer Bridget Orqvist at a planning meeting. Bridget and her sister Pat Van Allen also modeled costumes as samples of the type of desert attire that volunteers would wear at the Bethlehem Experience. The sisters first got the idea when they experienced a similar event in Toledo, Ohio when visiting family. In other cities, the Bethlehem Experience has been hosted by single church. In Ashtabula, it has become a chance for various groups to work together on what they share in common: a belief in Jesus of Nazareth, born in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. Each church will have an opportunity to contribute to the event, will be named in publicity, and also share information about their Christmas services with those who attend. The event has also attracted sponsors such as The Ashtabula Foundation, Ashtabula Towne Square, First United Methodist-Nehemiah Fund, Helping Hands Ministry, St. John School, St. Peter Episcopal Church Foundation, and University Hospital. As a result, free bussing will be available from three locations in Ashtabula, there will also be security, and other perks for guests.
