Upland Community Partnership for Youth Development A grassroots organization that provides educational and enriching after-school programs for at-risk kids in locations where the kids reside.

Upland Community Partnership for Youth Development (UCP) is a grassroots non-profit organization that provides a unique after-school program: VIC’s (Very Important Children’s) Place has two locations in low-income housing neighborhoods that have been identified as high-risk areas for gangs and drugs by the Upland Police Department. Now in its 19th year, our program provides a safe and structured

environment for kids to do their homework, get tutoring services, and participate in recreational and learning opportunities during the crucial after-school hours when many kids may otherwise involve themselves in various forms of risky behaviors or delinquency. The rationale for placing these centers in local neighborhoods is to serve the many children who are unable to participate in school-based or other off-site after-school activities because of economic, social, and transportation issues. Research shows that most children get into trouble during these critical after school hours. VIC’s Place provides an alternative safety net location for homework help and fun, educational activities.

VIC’s kids had a holiday surprise, thanks to a coordinated effort by the Upland skateboarders community. VIC’s kids at both UCP after school sites received their own skateboards and helmets, which they assembled and decorated with decals with help from pro skateboarder Steve Alba and Upland resident Dylan White, the event’s coordinator. Other supporters of this generous gift include the Hoffman family, the Historic Downtown Upland Merchant Association, Moore Electric of Rancho Cucamonga and Empire Skates of Upland.

Turning art into edibles. Kathy Cooper, an educator, city and school district employee and master baker, magically transformed VIC’s kids’ artwork into beautiful shortbread cookies for the UCP spaghetti dinner held Saturday, November 2. Cookies were sold to raise money for after-school programs.

Vic's Place recently hosted an open house with pizza, fruit, veggies, cheese, cupcakes and drinks. Vic's kids who attend our after-school program were joined by parents and siblings, community members, Upland school board members, Upland School District Superintendent Nancy Kelly, UCP board members, and Upland School District staff. New Chrome Books were also brought online during the open house.
