Let's talk about measles! Currently, there are no confirmed measles cases in Wyandot County. Here's what you need to know as cases rise in Ohio:

🦠 What is measles?
Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. Some people think of measles as just a little rash and fever that clears up in a few days. But measles can cause serious health complications, especially in children younger than 5 years old.

🗣️How does measles spread?
Measles is very contagious. Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. You can get measles just by being in a room where a person with measles has been. This can happen even up to 2 hours after the person with measles leaves the area.

👥 In fact, one person with measles can infect 12–18 others.
Those who are unvaccinated or have never had measles are considered susceptible — and 9 out of 10 susceptible people who are exposed to measles WILL get sick.

💉 How can I avoid getting sick?
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is 97% effective after 2 doses.
Not everyone can get MMR immunizations — when you choose to protect yourself and your family with MMR immunizations, you help protect others too. ❤️

🤒 What are the symptoms of measles?
Measles symptoms usually start 7-14 days after exposure with:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Pink eye
- Tiny white spots in the mouth
➡️ A red rash appears a few days later, starting on the face and spreading down the body. It typically lasts 4-7 days.

🚨 If you suspect measles:
📞 Call your healthcare provider immediately. Share your symptoms and let them know you are concerned that it could be measles.
⚠️ Do NOT just show up to seek healthcare. Call ahead to avoid exposing others in waiting areas.
