WHAT: CarFit is coming to Urbana Champaign County Senior Center to offer area senior drivers a free opportunity to check how their cars “fit” them.

Developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) in partnership, CarFit’s trained professionals
take older drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle, recommending minor adjustments that help make their cars “fit” better for comfort and safety. An occupational therapist is also on hand to provide information to seniors on how to maintain and strengthen driving health.


WHY: By 2030, there will be an estimated 58.9 million people aged 65 and older -that's 1 in 5 people. They're expected to represent 1 in 4 licensed drivers at that time. Personal mobility is critical for healthy aging, but as our bodies change as we age, ill-fitting vehicles can make it uncomfortable and unsafe to drive. Additionally, due to fragility, older drivers have the highest crash death rate per mile of everyone except teenagers. CarFit is a tool that can work to help keep seniors safer behind the wheel.

Urbana Township Fire & EMS Levy – Information for Residents

Urbana Township has a long-standing partnership with the Urbana Fire Division to provide professional fire and EMS services to township residents.

For approximately 15 years, the Urbana Fire Division and Urbana Township have worked together to provide fire and EMS services without asking township residents for an additional levy, while working to manage costs without sacrificing the level of service provided to the community.

The levy appearing on the November 2026 ballot is a 4-mill levy. Although it is listed as an "Additional” levy, it is intended to replace the township’s current 4-mill levy, which is based on 2011 property assessments.

The Urbana Fire Division is proud to serve Urbana Township and appreciates the township’s continued commitment to providing its community with an all full-time, professional fire division—the only township in Champaign County currently doing so.

Our shared goal is simple: maintain a high level of professional fire and EMS service while being responsible stewards of the community’s resources.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2026, as Patriot Day, 2026. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the Flag of the United States at half-staff in honor of the 2,977 victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001. I also invite the Governors of the United States and its Territories, and interested organizations and individuals, to join in this observance.

It is with profound sadness that The Urbana Fire Division announces the passing of retired Firefighter Richard Myers.

Firefighter Myers dedicated his career to serving the citizens of Urbana and retired with more than 25 years of service to our community.

His commitment to the Urbana Fire Division and the people he served will not be forgotten.

Patriot Day – September 11th

Below is the schedule of activities taking place at Freedom Grove on September 11th as our community comes together to remember and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those who have continued to serve our country in the years since.

Additionally, Champaign County fire departments will be stationed around the Square at approximately 7:00 a.m. on September 11th as the VFW lowers the flag to half-staff at sunrise in observance of Patriot Day.

We invite you to line the Square with us as we pause to remember, honor, and reflect on that day and the sacrifices made by so many.
