The Illinois Geometry Lab (IGL) ran five projects for talented Uni High (University Laboratory High School) students during this year's IGL-Uni High Summer Program. This annual program, now in its fourth year and made possible through funding provided by Uni High alumnus David Frankel, runs for four weeks during the summer and introduces Uni High students to the possibilities of advanced mathematical research. Each research team consists of one graduate student/postdoc team leader and up to five Uni High students.

The Susan C. Morisato Illinois Geometry Lab (IGL) Scholarship provides financial support for graduate students who previously participated as IGL research mentors for at least two semesters or summer to make progress on their thesis research for six weeks during in the summer. This annual scholarship is made possible by Illinois Department of Mathematics alumna Susan C. Morisato.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients, Nachiketa Adhikari and Jenna Zomback! 🎊

Alumnus Jiarui Xu is “grateful to Illinois Department of Mathematics faculty for offering research opportunities and teaching important professional and life lessons.”

“As an undergraduate, I was able to join the Illinois Geometry Lab and advised by Professor AJ Hildebrand. We studied fake randomness. Thanks to that, I went to the first academic conference in my life and won a data competition, which greatly helped to build my confidence. Later, I joined Professor Steven Bradlow's group to study the author/paper graph in the GEAR (GEometric structures And Representation) work. It was great fun and learned a lot of techniques that I am still benefiting from today.

“Today, I am a machine learning scientist developing honest and transparent financial products in a startup that was founded by U of I alum. I am also on the board of our alumni club in the SF bay area. Our math department and faculty gave me a great start in my career life and I am very grateful for your guidance and help.”

The Mrs. E. J. Hoover Program for Advanced Students in Mathematics enables three Illinois undergraduates to participate in an advanced IGL research project during the summer break. This year's project, supervised by Prof. Sean English and graduate student Emily Heath, focused on `Saturation Problems for Paths in Hypergraphs'. Check out what the three Hoover scholars Ali Guo, Junsheng Liu and Dipro Ray were able to accomplish under their guidance:
