🌊🚒 Swift Water Rescue Training 🚒🌊

Several members of the Utica Fire Department recently completed the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) Swift Water Rescue Operations course. This specialized training is another important step in expanding the department’s capabilities and preparing our members to safely and effectively respond to water-related emergencies.

The course provided firefighters with hands-on training in water rescue techniques, victim recovery, hazard recognition, incident management and the use of specialized rescue equipment in moving water environments. As severe weather events and flooding incidents continue to impact communities across New York State, having trained personnel ready to respond is critical.

This training is helping build a new tactical capability within the Utica Fire Department, ensuring our members are prepared to protect residents and visitors during swift water and flood emergencies. We are proud of the dedication these firefighters have shown in continuing their professional development and enhancing the services we provide to our community.

As always, the men and women of the Utica Fire Department remain committed to going Above and Beyond the Call.

A very Happy Memorial Day from all of us at Utica Fire Department.

🚨🚨Multi-Alarm Fires🚨🚨

Over the last 48 hours, the men and women of Utica Fire have battled two multi-alarm fires within the city. These fires were extremely manpower-intensive as each incident involved more than one building.

On Thursday, May 21st at 2341 hrs, Oneida County 911 began receiving multiple calls reporting a residential structure fire in the 700 block of Lansing St. Upon arrival, Car 4 (D/C Scherer) found two 2 story wood-frame houses with heavy fire showing from both structures. The incident was immediately upgraded to a 2nd Alarm, bringing all on-duty companies to the scene.

Crews worked tirelessly as the fire extended throughout both large homes. Firefighters operated for nearly two hours before bringing the fire under control. This incident also required the callback of two engine companies, one truck company and two Deputy Chiefs. There were no injuries reported. At this time, the fire remains under investigation.

On Friday, May 22nd at 2227 hrs, Oneida County 911 began receiving multiple calls reporting an apartment building fire in the 700 block of John St. Upon arrival, Car 4 (D/C Puleo) found a large three-story brick apartment building with heavy fire showing from the second floor along with multiple reports of people trapped. D/C Puleo immediately upgraded the incident to a 2nd alarm.

As companies were making entry, the fire jumped the alleyway into a two-story corner store. With fire now involving two large buildings, Car 1 - Chief of Department Ingersoll upgraded the incident to a 3rd alarm fire. Crews initially made an aggressive interior attack and search however they were later withdrawn due to rapidly changing fire conditions. Multiple attempts were made to re-enter the building but the fire had overtaken the attic and rapidly spread throughout all three floors. The fire was brought under control approximately three hours after dispatch.

At this time, the fire remains under investigation.

Crews worked tirelessly to control the fire and stop the spread between both buildings. Tragically, this fire resulted in one civilian fatality involving a resident of one of the apartments. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

This incident required the callback of three engine companies, one truck company, two ambulances and two Deputy Chiefs. While awaiting callback personnel to staff reserve apparatus, New York Mills Fire Department and Yorkville Fire Department were moved into the city to provide coverage for any additional alarms.

These last two days have been extremely demanding on our on-duty crews as well as the personnel who responded to staff reserve apparatus and assist on the fireground. We thank the community for its continued support of the department and our firefighters.

Thank-you!

The crew of Central Firehouse “Station 2” would like to extend a very heartfelt thank-you to Howard Potter for buying dinner for the on-duty crew.

It is much appreciated after both companies have been busy running calls and cleaning up from last night’s multiple-alarm fire.

Happy EMS Week

This week is National EMS Week where we celebrate the accomplishments, dedication and hard work of our Paramedics and EMTs. Each day, the men and women of UFD come to work and provide some of the best pre-hospital EMS care in the area.

UFD began providing Emergency Medical Services on November 11, 1980. In the late 1980s our famous Rescue 1, which responded to critical calls across the city, became ALS (Advanced Life Support) certified. Over the years, EMS evolved within UFD including the requirement in 2002 that all firefighters become Paramedics. In the years that followed, the late Fire Chief Russell Brooks II recognized the need to take EMS care a step further through transport EMS services (ambulances). After many years of hard work, UFD placed three ambulances into service on August 1, 2005.

Since 2005 our call volume has steadily increased resulting in nearly 10,000 transports to local hospitals each year. Most notably, in 2024, Ambulance 1 was recognized as the 7th busiest ambulance in the nation.

Through all the changes, updates, increasing call demand and long hours our firefighters have remained faithful and dedicated to their jobs. Each day our ambulances respond to calls for help with some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated providers in the profession. We thank them for their continued dedication, hard work and commitment to this city.

Fire Academy Update

The Utica Fire Academy has been busy with hands-on training! Over the past several weeks, recruits have completed multiple modules within the academy, including RTB (Rescue Tech Basic) skills, extrication training, car fires, tank fires and foam operations. This week, the recruits completed live burn training, which concludes the majority of the academy’s hands-on skills training.

The next few weeks will consist of national written and practical skills testing, haz-mat training, and codes training. Graduation is slated for the end of June.

🎉🎉Congratulations 🎉🎉

The men and women of Utica Fire would like to congratulate Adrian “Rick” Irizarry on his retirement after more than 20 years of faithful service.

Rick was appointed to the Bureau of Fire in September of 2003 and served in several firehouses across the city, most notably at Station 7 - “The Square”. For many years, Rick was a fixture on the ambulance where he served with distinction and pride. Rick also served as our EMS Coordinator twice with his most recent appointment lasting from 2024 until his retirement.

Rick is someone many of our providers looked to for guidance when calls were difficult or challenging. His passion for providing the “Cadillac of service” to every patient was nothing short of impeccable. Rick could recite any protocol at the drop of a hat all while making sure those learning understood it as well.

Rick, your impact on running one of the busiest fire department-based ambulance services in the state and the 7th busiest in the nation is truly remarkable. Thank you for your dedication to the city, its residents and our firefighters.

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and well-deserved retirement.

On Tuesday, May 12th, members of the Utica Fire Department participated in a MOCK DWI drill held at Notre Dame High School alongside several of our public safety agencies and community partners.

This realistic scenario was designed to show students the devastating consequences that can result from drinking and driving. Through a simulated motor vehicle crash involving injuries and fatalities, students witnessed firsthand the emotional and physical impact these incidents have on victims, families, friends and first responders.

We are proud to work together with our partner agencies to help educate young drivers and promote safe decision making. Our hope is that this demonstration leaves a lasting impression and encourages students to always make responsible choices behind the wheel.

Thank you to Notre Dame High School and all participating agencies for helping make this important educational event possible.
