SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REMINDER

As the school year begins, the Utica Fire Protection District reminds motorists to exercise increased caution around school buses, school zones, and bus stops.

When a school bus is stopped with flashing red lights and its stop arm extended, motorists are required to stop and remain stopped until it is safe and the bus resumes movement.

Please slow down, remain alert, and watch for children entering or crossing the roadway.

Help First Responders Find You!

Did you know there’s a simple app that can help first responders locate you faster in an emergency?

📱 What3Words divides the entire world into 3-meter squares and gives each location its own unique combination of three words. This can be especially helpful at Starved Rock State Park, where trails, canyons, overlooks, and wooded areas can make it difficult to describe exactly where you are.

If you’re hiking, exploring, or enjoying our state park, consider downloading the What3Words app before you go.

In an emergency:
• Open What3Words
• Find your current 3-word location
• Provide it to 911/dispatch
• Share any additional information you can, such as the trail you’re on or a nearby landmark.

Knowing your exact location can help emergency responders get to you faster and more efficiently.

When was the last time you tested your smoke alarms? Make sure alarms are working properly by testing them regularly and replacing batteries as needed.

Remember:
• Test smoke alarms monthly
• Replace alarms that are 10 years old or older
• Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home
• Keep a fire extinguisher easily accessible
• Make sure everyone in your home knows two ways out
