Today, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day and honor generations of women who endured opposition, who fought, who sacrificed, and who ultimately won us the right to vote in 1920. The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of s*x.

Fast forward 53 years…

In 1973, Congresswoman Bella Abzug, one of just 16 women serving in the U.S. House of Representatives at the time, championed legislation designating August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

We remember and recognize these women and their work on a historic movement, and we also stand by those who are continuing to advocate for equal pay, representation, and civil rights!

Her music reached millions, making her an entertainment icon. Her generosity, kindness and boldness reached millions more, making her a legend.

Rest in peace, Dolly. We will always love you!

We’d like to congratulate TWO members of our team who recently received community awards!

View Point Clinical Therapy Services, LCSW, PLLC presented the very first ViewPoint Lilac Award to Vikki Smithson, Director of the Herkimer County Child Advocacy Center. The Lilac Award was created to recognize individuals whose kindness, leadership, and commitment create meaningful change. “Vikki’s unwavering dedication, compassion, and advocacy have made a lasting impact on the children and families throughout our community. Through her leadership, countless children have been given a safe voice, unwavering support, and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Our Director of Mission Impact Michelle McCarrick was honored with the 2026 Community Ambassador Award at Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc.’s Community Champions Gala. Michelle’s passion for our community, extensive work with youth, inclusive practices, and commitment to meaningful change are reflected in everything she does.

We are incredibly proud to see both women recognized!

The Mohawk Valley Latino Association’s Latino Festival is a summer staple in the community! We were proud to table and support Sonia Martinez and her team’s incredible efforts today at this celebration of culture and community!

Did you know…. Sonia’s longtime service to YWCA MV includes being a board member and board president, and she is a member of our Salute Academy.

GET READY!

We’re just under the one month mark leading up to Mohawk Valley Gives, and we’re getting ready to make every dollar, every share, and every act of support count.

One day.
One community.
A whole lot of impact!

Staying connected with our statewide partners!

Our Assistant Director of Crisis Services Melissa Galijasevic and Assistant Director of Court Advocacy Mikayla Balderston joined colleagues from r**e crisis program agencies across New York State in Troy at The Alliance Against Sexual Violence’s annual meeting.

Aside from great networking and connection with individuals in the field from Buffalo to New York City, they received training and information to bring back to our team here in the Mohawk Valley, and were amongst the first to see The Alliance’s newly completed rebrand. Check out the new look and give them a follow here: https://www.facebook.com/newyorkalliance

We are always thankful for The Alliance, as they support survivors and organizations that serve them by leading NYS’s mission to end s*xual violence through education, prevention programming, research, and policy advocacy.

We need you to know about the work we do!

It is important information for everyone, because so many in our region are unfortunately affected by domestic or s*xual violence, or child abuse. If it is you who needs help, or you know someone who does, know we’re here.

These are our child abuse and s*xual assault services.

See all of our services here: https://online.fliphtml5.com/.../YWCA-Overview-Piece.../

Child Advocacy Centers (CACs)
Our Child Advocacy Center staff provide ongoing crisis services for victims and survivors of child abuse – regardless of when the abuse occurred or whether it was reported.
• 24-hour crisis hotline
• Individual and group counseling
• Advocacy and accompaniment through court, law enforcement, and medical proceedings

Herkimer County CAC
We operate this nationally accredited location and are the lead agency in the large scale multi-disciplinary team that works together to ensure the uniform handling of child abuse cases in the county. Our site is equipped to handle acute exams in a private, child-friendly environment, so they do not have to go to the hospital. We also provide forensic interviews, therapy, victim advocacy, and more.

Oneida County CAC
We are a longtime partner at this location, which handles investigations of child abuse and s*xual abuse in which the victim is under 17 years of age. We work alongside the District Attorney, and Police and Sheriff’s Departments. Our on-site advocates provide support, case management, and counseling to survivors.
_____________________

Adult Sexual Assault Services
For those 18 years or older who experience s*xual assault, our advocates can help expertly navigate this traumatic time. We are certified and trained to know every step of medical examinations and can be present to assure they are done thoroughly and the victim is aware of their rights. Acute exams can also be done at
our Herkimer County CAC location. We can then guide victims through law enforcement and courts, and to therapy if needed.

Campus Advocacy
Staff provides advocacy and accompaniment to survivors of domestic and s*xual violence on all college and university campuses across Herkimer and Oneida counties, with office hours for students and education for faculty and staff.
