MVCC CSTEP The Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program at Mohawk Valley Community College.

CSTEP is a New York State Department of Education grant-funded enrichment initiative designed to foster academic excellence, cultivate student independence, enhance students' college experience, and increase awareness and opportunities for historically and economically underrepresented college students:

- In pre-professional or professional undergraduate study
- Majoring in math, science, technology, and health related fields
- Seeking professional licensure

As this year of CSTEP ends, we’re celebrating the students who excelled!

One of them is Habiba Mberwa, who won the Daron Malik Jae Simpson Memorial Scholarship! 👏

This scholarship was created specifically for single mothers, and preference is given to minority residents of Utica who demonstrate financial need and who have taken the initiative to personally improve their lives and that of their families.

CSTEP celebrated the end of a great year with a trip to Boston!

Our students learned about cutting-edge technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and aquatic science at the New England Aquarium. (We also explored the beautiful city!)

Congratulations to all of our graduating CSTEP students! 

To celebrate them and all of you for your hard work this semester, we are hosting a CSTEP 2025 Graduation Party in the CSTEP Lab Room 204 this Thursday, May 15th from 3pm-5pm.

At the party, we will hang out, reflect on this year at MVCC, and have cake!

Yesterday, MVCC CSTEP alum Ghaiath Idrees returned to campus to share his inspiring story — “From MVCC to Medical School.”

A 2020 graduate of our Biology and Surgical Technology programs, Ghaiath came to the U.S. as a refugee from Syria in 2016. He is now on the path to becoming a doctor at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

At MVCC, Ghaiath excelled academically, consistently making the President’s List and being inducted into MVCC’s Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. He also was a member of the MVCC Men’s Soccer Team.

Thank you, Ghaiath, for sharing your journey with our students!

CSTEP attended the annual CNY Research Conference at SUNY Oswego!

Our student researchers presented their findings, connected with other students, gained exclusive access to opportunities, and learned from visionary leaders!

(We also snuck in a quick trip to the beautiful Lake Ontario!)

We’re all very proud of each and every one of our students in attending and completing this rigorous research project. They are all great examples of STEM success for others to follow! Go Hawks!
