There will be an opportunity to talk about Mark if you wish; there will be a reception at the church's Fellowship Hall after the performance and we hope to hear from everybody who wants to be heard!

It is with great sadness we report that San Francisco Bay Area composer and conductor, Dr. Mark Alburger, passed away yesterday afternoon, June 20, 2023, at his home in Vacaville, after an extended illness. He is survived by his partner and wife, Harriet March Page, and by his mother, Bette Alburger, his sister, Sorrel Ann Alburger, and his son, Cliff Alburger.

Born April 2, 1957 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Dr. Alburger was an eclectic American composer of postminimal, postpopular, and postcomedic sensibilities. He played oboe in Philadelphia and Delaware County Youth Orchestras (the latter in association with George Crumb, Richard Wernick, and George Rochberg), and studied composition with Karl Kohn (Pomona College, 1978); Gerald Levinson and Joan Panetti (Swarthmore College, B.A., 1979); Thomas Wubbenhorst (Weber State University, 1983); Jules Langert (Dominican University of California, M.A., 1991); Roland Jackson, Thomas Flaherty, and Christopher Yavelow (Claremont Graduate University, Ph.D., 1996); and Terry Riley (1997-1999).

Dr. Alburger was Founder and Music Director of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra (SFCCO), Music Director and Resident Composer of San Francisco Cabaret Opera / Goat Hall Productions (SFCCO/GHP), Editor-Publisher of 21st-Century Music Journal, and Music Critic for Commuter Times and San Francisco Classical Voice.

A memorial concert will be held later this year with details of the event to be sent out closer to that date. Condolences for the family may be directed to Harriet March Page at [email protected]

An Invitation from Harriet March Page...

Before the Pandemic I used to say: “I am interested in the phenomenology of events” which kept me at a pretty safe distance from feeling (suffering) about what goes on in this world of ours. But now...
..I am beyond words.

A favorite quote of mine is from Nietsche as memorialized by Mahler: "Deeper still than grief is joy."

Since we find ourselves these days in an absurdly bifurcated world of equal parts humanity and inhumanity, and at the same time, life as we know it has come to an end with much grief and suffering and great losses, we must celebrate this winter season with a little of everything.

So, join us on ZOOM on Friday, December 3, 7:00pm for a little of everything in music from Goat Hall Productions.
