The Valatie Fire Department is 100 percent volunteer. Our members protect the Village of Valatie an This year we are celebrating our 175th Anniversary!

Since 1837 the Valatie Fire Department has been protecting Valatie and our surrounding communities.

This morning, members from Valatie, Niverville, Kinderhook, and Stuyvesant Fire Departments got together for some water supply training.

Crews worked on setting up portable ponds, drafting, and moving water between multiple ponds, all important skills for those areas where the nearest hydrant isn't "near" at all.

Training like this gives everyone a chance to work together, sharpen their skills, and make sure things run smoothly when it counts.

A big thank you to Niverville Fire Department Inc., Kinderhook Fire Company (Palmer Engine & Hose Company # 1), and Stuyvesant Fire Company #1 for joining us this morning and putting in the time.

Congratulations to this year’s Firefighter of the Year, Sam Becker!

Sam has been a member of the department for 20 years, serving in several roles along the way, including Assistant Chief, and currently serves as our 1st Lieutenant.

Over the past two decades, Sam has put in countless hours answering calls, attending trainings, and help his community. After 20 years, we figured it was probably about time we gave him something besides another pager activation.

Congratulations Sam, and thank you for 20 years of dedication and service to the Valatie Fire Department and our community!

Yesterday was one for the books.

With roughly 10 inches of rain falling in the area, our members were out from around 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. (we think), handling somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 calls. We say “somewhere in the neighborhood” because we are still counting calls, finishing paperwork, and trying to remember what day it is.

We want to thank the public for their patience and cooperation throughout the day, and especially thank our volunteers who gave up their entire day to respond wherever they were needed.

We also want to recognize the dispatcher at Columbia County NY 911 who handled probably close to 200 calls, possibly more, while keeping everything moving behind the scenes. Dispatchers are often the voice you hear but the face you never see, and yesterday was a perfect example of just how important that voice is.

It was a long day for everyone involved, but as always, our members answered the call.

Yesterday, members of the Valatie Fire Department participated in the 101st Annual Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association Convention Parade.

Our color guard brought home 2nd Place for Best Appearing Firematic Color Guard. Judging by the size of the trophy, we may need to start planning an addition to the firehouse just to display it.

We were also incredibly grateful to receive a $1,000 donation from Hathaways Helping Hand. Thank you for your generous support of our department and the work we do for our community.

Thank you to everyone who marched, drove, prepared the apparatus and helped represent Valatie. Great job by all!

More congratulations are in order! This time, we would like to congratulate our Chief, Joseph H. Loeffler, and his wife, Janet, on their marriage.

Chief, we are happy to see you found someone brave enough to take command at home. Wishing you both a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness from all of us at the Valatie Fire Department. Congratulations, Chief and Janet!

Tonight, members were out at the Town of Kinderhook Community Event alongside several other emergency services agencies. It was a great evening with the community.
