Congratulations to Valdez High School Class of 2026 senior, James Humphrey, who was named a National Merit Finalist! He received a Certificate of Merit - an exceptional achievement that places him among the top students in the nation. James is VHS's first National Merit Scholar Finalist in recent history.

This distinction reflects a highly rigorous process. Of the approximately 1.3 million students who enter by taking the PSAT in their junior year, only 15,000 nationwide advance to Finalist standing after demonstrating outstanding academic performance, strong SAT/ACT scores, a written essay, and school endorsement.

James just completed his Associate of Arts degree through dual credit enrollment with PWSC and he will be attending Princeton University in the fall to study aerospace engineering.

Final write-up from the NYO Games Alaska State Competition

We are especially proud to announce two new school records for the Scissor Broad Jump! Connor Hamilton (33' 10 3/4") and Zoey Cronk (25' 5") have each made it on the VHS leader board.

Event summary: NYO had a great weekend at the Alaska Airlines Center. We took six athletes with us and they represented well. Along with new PRs, school records, and a top five finish, the kids spent the weekend meeting new friends and hanging out with friends and family from across the state they don't see often. Below are the events and results.
