The City of Valdez has launched a new Community Resource List that brings together essential local, state, and regional services in one convenient place. Whether you're looking for housing resources, food assistance, health care, family services, transportation, veterans' services, or other community support, this directory can help point you in the right direction.

September is , and the resource list also includes important local mental and behavioral health resources for individuals and families. If you or someone you know needs support, help is available.🩵💜

You can access the full Community Resource List anytime at www.valdezak.gov/CommunityResources or pick up a printed brochure at the City Hall front desk or the Community Development office.

City of Valdez offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8.
Public Safety, EMS, Fire, and residential trash routes will not be affected.

🫎Hunting season has started - before you head out, here's a quick refresher on what the City Code says about fi****ms, hunting, and trapping in town.

• Discharging a firearm within city limits is illegal except at designated ranges and a few specific mapped areas.
• The Duck Flats, Mineral Creek State Park, Nayurluku Park at Meals Hill, and the area within 500 feet of the Mineral Creek ski trails are closed to hunting & trapping entirely.
• Traps must be at least a half-mile from neighborhoods and 500 feet from roads -- know the map!
• A citation under these rules means a mandatory court appearance, not just a ticket.

Another successful Backcountry Search & Rescue operation by Valdez Fire Department members!
Valdez is incredibly fortunate to have 1) such dedicated and highly trained staff & volunteers in our Backcountry and Swiftwater Rescue teams, and 2) indispensable backcountry gear and equipment, capable of handling the many diverse calls VFD receives.
Thankfully, those involved in this incident were uninjured and received assistance within an hour of dispatch. Situations like these are why our team members train constantly - so we are able to assist our residents and visitors when things go sideways. (Because we all know Mother Nature can be unpredictable!) 💪

The artwork of Tailbone Designs has tapped into the quirky personality of Valdez, bringing humor, adventure, and hometown charm to everything from stickers and murals to business logos and community art.

This month's Business Spotlight features local artist Heidi Franke, whose business, Tailbone Designs, has grown from a handful of popular stickers into a thriving creative studio serving businesses, organizations, residents, and visitors alike.

You’ve probably seen Heidi’s work around town, from the colorful harbor pennants and Kelsey Dock art panels to logos, murals, theatre sets, hand-painted signs, and artwork for local businesses. Her unmistakable style celebrates everything that makes Valdez unique, with whimsical bunnies, mischievous magpies, and even ice-climbing (and the popular fat tire biking) skeletons!

"Valdez is a great place to start small and grow," says Heidi. "You can make connections through your friends and neighbors, and now I'm receiving commission requests from people who have fallen in love with Valdez."

Outdoor Warning Siren Testing
Thursday, September 3 | 9 AM–5 PM

The City's outdoor warning sirens will sound intermittently throughout the day for annual testing and maintenance. You may hear different tones and voice messages than during our regular Wednesday test.

‼️This is only a test. No action is needed.

We're not crying... you're crying!🥹 It was so incredible to see Valdezians come together to support another Alaskan community in need!! Thank you to everyone who donated dog & cat food, toys, stuffies for kids, animal bedding, litter, and litter boxes for the people and pets of Tok affected by the wildfire. 🫶
And a big thank you to Thor Niazi for transporting a connex of supplies to Tok!
Honestly, we're not surprised by the community's rallying of support and donations for our fellow Alaskans in need, because this is just what Valdez does time and again. Our hearts are grateful for such a caring community!

Thank you, Valdez!!

Due to the amount of numerous donations by our wonderful community and other visitors to Valdez, we were able to send pet supplies to support Tok this week.

Thank you to this great community and those who make Alaska such an amazing place to live! Even when cities are hours apart, we still support each other.

With cooler temps arriving, are you starting to worry about upcoming heating bills?❄️

The ACES (Accelerating Clean Energy Savings) program offers rebates to help residents in coastal communities, including Valdez, switch from oil, diesel, propane, natural gas, or wood heat to energy-efficient heat pumps.

Rebates of $4,000, $6,000, or $8,500 are available based on household income. There's no income cap on the $4,000 rebate, so most qualifying households can receive it. Funding is available for up to 6,000 heat pumps across 43+ coastal communities through 2029.

This program is brought to you by Alaska Heat Smart, the Southeast Conference, and the Alaska Municipal League, not the City of Valdez. We want to share this news with you because it could help lower heating costs. Find out more about this rebate program at https://akheatsmart.org/aces
