It is one of five primary schools in the Valdosta City School System. The school was originally opened in 1950. It is named in honor of two teachers, Miss Mamie Sallas and Miss Cora Mahone. In 1950 Sallas Mahone consisted of sixteen classrooms, a lunchroom, an office, and a nurse's room. In 2000 a new building was completed at the present location to replace our former facility at 2401 N. Patterso
n Street. The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, SPLOST, was used to fund the construction of our new school, which took three years to complete. The overall design of our school, including the interior space, was based on recommendations from teachers and administrators. Our facility consists of 99,000 heated square feet and it is located on twenty-one and one-half acres. A wooded area, a field and the Boys and Girls Club border our campus. Over the years our school has experienced steady growth with the current student population over nine hundred. Grade levels taught within the school have changed over time. In 1981 as part of the desegregation plan, the fifth and sixth grades were relocated to become part of an upper elementary school. In 1994 the fourth grade level was relocated to the upper elementary school as part of a system realignment that resulted in the inclusion of sixth grade at the middle school. Today, Sallas Mahone once again includes fourth and fifth grade, as part of the consolidation between Sallas Mahone and West Gordon (which was rebuilt as the new S.L. Mason in 2008). We added twenty new classrooms and over 40 new staff and faculty members. We also have three Bright from the Start PreK classes, allowing us to serve students in PreK through fifth grade.
