Valdosta Rotary Club

Valdosta Rotary Club The Rotary Club of Valdosta, GA meets every Wednesday at noon at the Rainwater Conference Center.

The worldโ€™s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed Feb. 23, 1905, by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture within a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small
towns of his youth. As the first club chartered in the state of Florida and the nearest club to Valdosta, Jacksonville members were approached by a selec

t group of men in Valdosta to sponsor a Valdosta club. Reluctant at first, Jacksonville finally agreed and the club was organized March 24, 1919 and received its charter June 1, 1919. Founded with 21 members, they met at the Valdez Hotel for lunch, so that the Jacksonville sponsoring members could come to Valdosta that morning by train and return that afternoon. The early club also met at the Daniel Ashley Hotel, the Patterson Hotel and the Womenโ€™s Center.

Because of that support, Valdosta Rotarian Brad Lawson, who completed the 30-mile walk, presented a check for $1,380.50 to Thressea Boyd and Wes Sewell, members of the Valdosta Rotary Club Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner (LEAD) committee. The funds will support local law enforcement officers and their families during times of need.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office - Valdosta, Georgia, for organizing this important annual event that honors the legacy and sacrifice of those who endured the Bataan Death March, and for the funds donated, which will continue to support local law enforcement officers who protect our community every day. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ’™

The Valdosta Rotary Club is gearing up for our Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, June 6, 2026, and we need your help to make this event a success!

Volunteer shifts available:
โฐ 7:00 a.m. โ€“ 8:30 a.m. (Need 5-6 volunteers)
โฐ 8:30 a.m. โ€“ 3:30 p.m. (Need 3-4 volunteers each hour)

Whether you can help for an hour or stay longer, weโ€™d love to have you on the team! Volunteers will help with event setup, registration, hospitality, and keeping the tournament running smoothly.

The Valdosta Rotary Club extends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ed Willis, a former Valdosta Rotarian who passed away this week.

Ed was an active and dedicated member of our club for more than 40 years, and his legacy of service is woven into the fabric of who we are today. His commitment to Rotaryโ€™s motto of โ€œService Above Selfโ€ helped strengthen our club and set an example for generations of Rotarians who continue the work of serving our community.

We are grateful for Edโ€™s many years of fellowship and service, and we join his family and loved ones in honoring a life well lived.

๐Ÿ’™ The Valdosta Rotary Club is saddened by the passing of Barbara Milhous, who blessed our club for more than 30 years with her beautiful piano playing. ๐ŸŽน๐ŸŽถ

Barbaraโ€™s music became such a special part of our Rotary meetings and traditions. Her talent, kindness, and faithful dedication brought joy to generations of members and guests.

Please keep her family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 3 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Valdosta. Visitation will be from 2:15 p.m. until service time at the church. Interment will follow at Friendship Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Hahira.

The Valdosta Rotary Club is incredibly grateful for the continued support of the ๐†๐ž๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐š ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ Interact Club and its commitment to literacy in our community. ๐Ÿ“šโค๏ธ

Recently, the GCS Interact Club presented the Valdosta Rotary Club with another generous donation for the ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‹๐ข๐›๐ซ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ program. Over the past 10 years, Georgia Christian School has contributed more than $13,700 to help provide free books to children across Lowndes County.

The funds are raised through the schoolโ€™s annual Rosemary Jackson Read-a-Thon Week, held in honor of beloved teacher and librarian Rosemary Jackson, who passed away in 2013. Her passion for reading and love for children continue to inspire students and families each year.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library mails one free, age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children from birth to age 5, helping build home libraries and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Research shows that children who are read to regularly enter school more prepared, develop stronger language skills, and are more likely to succeed academically.

Through partnerships like this, the Valdosta Rotary Club has helped provide thousands of books to local children โ€” making a lasting impact one story at a time.
