Streetlight Stories | Starting Over After Almost Dying
He told me, “I almost died.”
As he shared his story with me, what stood out the most was how much loss one person could carry and still keep going.
He said over the years he lost most of his family. He came from a small family that just slowly died out. He has a brother, but even he struggles sometimes trying to take care of himself.
For a while, life was okay. He was working and doing pretty good for himself. Then all of a sudden his health started failing. One sickness turned into another. In and out of the hospital so much that eventually he lost his job.
That’s when he found out his kidneys were failing.
Then came the heart attack.
He told me there was a point where he truly didn’t know if he was going to survive.
By the time he was discharged from the hospital, he had nowhere to go.
LAMP took him in directly from the hospital and started helping him piece his life back together. Getting set up with dialysis. Transportation. Medication. Doctors appointments. Just helping him create some kind of stability and routine again.
And little by little, things started changing.
Once his health improved and he got into a routine, LAMP was able to help house him through the Rapid Rehousing Program.
One thing he shared with me that really touched me was that through LAMP he also got connected to a church.
That meant something to him.
Because sometimes people come through our doors needing more than shelter. Sometimes they need community. Sometimes they need somebody to remind them they still matter after life has almost taken everything from them.
Sometimes rebuilding your life starts with somebody simply refusing to let you fight alone.
