The City of Valdosta will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

The Sanitation Division will collect garbage only (green roll-out cans) on September 7. Bulk items and yard trash will not be collected that day. Regular bulk and yard trash collection services will resume on the following business day, Tuesday, September 8.

Hurricane season is a good reminder that storm preparation starts before severe weather is in the forecast. Taking time now to care for your yard and trees can help reduce potential hazards around your home when strong winds and heavy rain arrive.

Residents can take a few simple steps to help keep their property storm ready:
🌿 Trim dead or weak branches and keep limbs away from your home and roof.
🌳 Check trees for signs of disease, decay, or other damage. If you have concerns about a tree’s health or stability, consult a certified arborist for a professional assessment.
🍂 Clear yard debris that could become dangerous projectiles.
🪑 Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, planters, tools, and other loose items.
⚠️ Never attempt to remove large branches or trees near power lines yourself.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when severe weather arrives.

🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT: SMITH AVENUE ROAD CLOSURE 🚧

Motorists are advised that crews are beginning work along Smith Avenue between Tucker Lane and Highway Place.

The closure is estimated to last approximately six hours. Drivers should avoid the area when possible, use alternate routes, and allow additional travel time.

Please use caution around the work zone and watch for crews and posted traffic control measures. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as this work is completed.

This week, the City of Valdosta welcomed participants from Leadership Lowndes to City Hall for an inside look at the people, departments, and services that support our community each day.

City leadership and department heads discussed their departments, highlighting key services, current initiatives, and the important role each team plays in serving Valdosta residents.

Later, the class visited the City’s Traffic Management Center, where they learned about one of Valdosta’s most important infrastructure systems and how technology, coordination, and real-time traffic management help keep motorists moving safely and efficiently throughout the city.

Thank you to Leadership Lowndes for spending the day with us and taking the opportunity to learn more about the work happening behind the scenes at the City of Valdosta!

From filming and editing to photography and digital content, Iesha helps showcase the people, programs, and services that make an impact throughout Valdosta.

With a background that blends creativity and communication, Iesha brings a thoughtful approach to helping residents see and understand the work happening across their City.

Last week, the City of Valdosta officially celebrated the ribbon-cutting and dedication of the Jeanette Newbern Coody Warming/Cooling Shelter, marking a new chapter for a facility centered on compassion, safety, and service.

Located at 1104 W. Gordon Street, the shelter will provide residents with a safe and welcoming place during periods of extreme heat and severe cold. Its new name honors Jeanette Newbern Coody, whose lifetime of service left a lasting impact on Valdosta and communities throughout South Georgia.

Mrs. Coody’s legacy includes founding The Haven, Valdosta’s first shelter for victims of domestic violence, and dedicating her life to creating places of safety, support, and hope for people during some of their most difficult moments.

The ribbon cutting brought together City leaders, community partners, friends, family, and residents to celebrate both the future of this important facility and the remarkable woman whose name it now carries.

🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT: FRY STREET ROAD CLOSURE 🚧

Motorists are advised of an upcoming hard road closure on South Fry Street beginning Monday, August 24, 2026, while necessary railroad track repairs are completed.

Location: Near 377 S. Fry St. at the railroad crossing
Closure Begins: Monday, August 24
Estimated Duration: Approximately 1–2 weeks

During the closure, no vehicle traffic will be able to cross the railroad tracks on Fry Street. Due to the nature of the repairs, the exact length of the closure is currently unknown and will depend on the conditions encountered during the work.

Please refer to the detour that will be in place around the closure. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and use caution when traveling through the area.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation while this necessary work is completed.
