PRESS RELEASE

SNTDS Issues Statement Regarding Rosebud Sioux Tribe Game, Fish & Parks Announcement on Custer State Park Bison Incident

VALENTINE, NE — The Office of the Founder and Interim Executive Director of Sicangu Nation Tribal Defense Solutions (SNTDS), through its Administrative Services Division, is issuing this statement in response to the public announcement released today by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Game, Fish & Parks (RST‑GFP) regarding the tragic incident at Custer State Park involving a bison and the loss of a human life.

RST‑GFP has confirmed that the bison involved in the incident will not be euthanized. Instead, the animal will be transferred into the custody of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and relocated to a secure, non‑public environment where it will live out its natural life.

This decision reflects the Tribe’s cultural responsibility to protect Tatanka, while also ensuring public safety and honoring the sacred relationship between the Lakota people and the buffalo.

SNTDS acknowledges the gravity of the incident and extends condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life.

We also recognize the professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by state and tribal partners who worked together to ensure the situation was handled with respect, clarity, and cultural awareness.

SNTDS remains committed to supporting intertribal coordination and upholding the safety, sovereignty, and cultural values of the Sicangu Lakota Oyate.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
From the Founder & Interim Executive Director
Prepared and Released by the Office of Administrative Services

“Across our homelands, Tatanka are more than wildlife they are relatives. They are part of our creation story, our survival, and our identity as Lakota people. When tragedy occurs, we respond not only with procedure, but with compassion, cultural grounding, and responsibility.

Today’s announcement from RST‑GFP reflects that balance. It honors the life that was lost, acknowledges the wild nature of the animal involved, and upholds our obligation to protect Tatanka while ensuring the safety of the public.

This is how sovereign Nations lead with clarity, with respect, and with cultural truth.

To the family grieving: we hold you in our prayers.

To our relatives at RST‑GFP and the partners who assisted in this response: we see your work, your care, and your commitment to doing what is right in a moment that demanded both decisiveness and cultural understanding.

As Sicangu people, we know that our responsibility to the land and to our relatives human and animal is intertwined.

SNTDS stands with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in this decision and remains committed to strengthening the systems that protect our people, our lands, and the sacred beings who share them with us.”

Tonight we’re sharing an important roadway safety update for our relatives and neighbors traveling through Todd County.

Our partners at the Todd County Sheriff’s Department have reported a highway buckle on Highway 18 near the Mosher Road junction.

Emergency crews have completed temporary repairs, but the area remains unstable and will require continued caution.

SNTDS is asking all drivers to slow down, reduce speed well before the hazard zone, and stay alert for cones, workers, and changing road conditions.

Nighttime travel in this stretch may be especially risky due to limited visibility.

Our team will continue monitoring conditions and coordinating with county and state partners to ensure the safety of our communities.

If you encounter additional roadway issues, please report them immediately to local law enforcement or emergency services.

SNTDS Issues Statement Regarding Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Notice on Rapid City Fairgrounds Shooting Investigation

VALENTINE, NE — The Office of the Founder and Interim Executive Director of Sicangu Nation Tribal Defense Solutions (SNTDS), through its Administrative Services Division, is issuing this statement to share verified public safety information released by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety (OSTDPS) regarding the Rapid City Central States Fairgrounds shooting investigation.

OSTDPS has confirmed that the suspect involved in the incident has been identified as 58‑year‑old John Troy Lee of Rapid City, South Dakota. Following the initial shooting, law enforcement received information indicating the suspect may have been traveling toward the Pine Ridge Reservation. A coordinated response was initiated, and with assistance from community tips, OSTDPS officers located the suspect on the southwest portion of the reservation.

During the encounter, the suspect fired at officers. One officer was struck by gunfire and sustained injuries. The suspect was subsequently killed. The incident remains under active investigation by the appropriate agencies, and additional information will be released as permitted.

SNTDS emphasizes the importance of ensuring that our relatives remain informed with accurate, verified information during incidents of regional concern. We extend our respect to the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s first responders and acknowledge the seriousness of this event and the courage demonstrated by those who responded under threat.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

From the Founder & Interim Executive Director
Prepared and Released by the Office of Administrative Services

When that call comes in about an officer in need of assistance or worse, the call no officer ever wants to hear, ‘officer down’ everything stops. Your heart drops. Your breath catches. And in that moment, every responder, every dispatcher, every family member who has ever waited for someone to come home feels that fear in their bones.

When I first learned what happened today, my thoughts went immediately to the OST‑DPS officer who was struck, to the tribal troopers and officers who ran toward danger without hesitation, and to the families who were suddenly thrown into that terrifying uncertainty. These moments are never just headlines or incident summaries they are human beings. Relatives. People who put on a uniform knowing that one day the call might come, and today it did.

To the officer who was injured: across our homelands, people are praying for you. We are thinking of you, holding space for your healing, and honoring the courage you showed in a moment that demanded everything of you. You are not alone in this not today, not in the days ahead.

To the tribal troopers, officers, and responders who stepped into the unknown today: I see you. I see the bravery it takes to move toward danger when every instinct tells you to protect yourself. I see the weight you carry afterward the quiet moments when the adrenaline fades and the reality settles in. Your courage matters. Your service matters. And your lives matter to all of us.

To the community members who shared information, who stayed alert, who helped protect their homelands in the ways they could you were part of the response too. Public safety is never carried by one agency alone; it is held by all of us, together.

I want to speak plainly: our officers, our responders, and our people deserve to be safe. They deserve to go home to their families. And when violence reaches our communities, it reminds us how deeply interconnected we are as Lakota Nations. What affects Pine Ridge affects Rosebud. What affects Rosebud affects Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Lower Brule all of us. We are one people, and our safety is shared.

As Lakota people, we understand that when violence touches one Nation, it touches all of us. Our Oglala relatives are our relatives still. Their pain is our pain. Their officers walk the same long, hard road that ours do. And when one of them is hurt, we feel that hurt too.

As Founder and Interim Executive Director of SNTDS, I want our Oglala relatives to know this: we stand with you. We honor your bravery. We grieve with you. And we remain committed to building systems of safety that protect every Lakota life officers, families, and community members alike.

We will continue to monitor this situation closely. But more importantly, we will continue to stand with our relatives. Because in moments like this, titles and jurisdictions fall away, and what remains is what has always bound us together: we are one people, and we look after one another.”
