We have 1 free sumac start (it's probably staghorn, maybe tiger eye) available for the taking at the VC Library. If not one claims it by closing at 1 today (Saturday) I will tie the bag on the metal butterfly bench out back and someone can grab it there. If you want to see what it looks like in a garden, it came from the plants in the Butterfly Garden.

It's Summer and everyone is reading -- something we LOVE to see! But...we would like to remind everyone to be careful with library books. Keep your books safe and clean! This book got wet while returning during a thunderstorm, so it has molded and will now have to be thrown away as it stinks, it's stained, and the paper, glue and cardboard have lost their integrity and the book is beginning to fall apart. We have had a lot of books come back wet recently. Please protect your books from moisture when you are out and about, and please don't put them in the book box when it's raining or misting. Even if you have the book in a plastic bag, the bag drips on other books that are already in the box, and can ruin them.

We have also had a HUGE amount of books come back with food in them - greasy crackers and chips make stains that soak into and through pages. Candy makes pages stick together and tear when you try to separate them. Spaghetti sauce or pudding makes a mess that is impossible to clean. A cup of coffee or a Coke next to a book can spill and stain everything. No one wants to read through food stains. Please don't eat or drink with your books.

Attention Gardeners! If you have a little time Saturday, June 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. to come help w**d, trim and help get the Butterfly Garden (at 314 E. Clay in Valley Center, behind the VC Library) ready for summer that would be great. Please bring your tools, water, etc. We'll have donuts.
