Recently we have had questions about the legality of electric powered bicycles and scooters. Also there are some solely electric powered motorcycle type vehicles that have been questioned. Pictured are the definitions of the three classes of e-bikes and the electric scooters. Any non-pedal equipped two wheeled bike that is in excess of the listed specifications are called e-motos. These have higher horsepower ratings and speed in excess of 28 mph. These e-motos are not street legal unless they would have tags, insurance and required safety lighting. These would also require the proper operators license.

We ask that people using the e-bikes and scooters obey the rules and laws of the road and be courteous when operating these on school property. We recommend if any e-bikes are going to be operated at fast speeds to keep them on the roads and not on the sidewalks. Just like people riding bicycles, traffic laws do apply.
