Valley Stream Union Free School District 24 is a unique elementary school district. Our 1,069 students are in Kindergarten through grade 6. There are 348 students at Brooklyn Avenue School, 325 students at William L. Buck School, and 396 students at Robert W. Carbonaro School. Upon completion of the sixth grade, our students continue their education in the junior and senior high schools of the Valley Stream Central High School District.

VALLEY STREAM 24 FIFTH-GRADE SOCCER TOURNAMENT CELEBRATES SPORTSMANSHIP AND COMMUNITY

Students from all three schools in the Valley Stream 24 School District enjoyed a day of friendly competition during the district’s Annual Fifth-Grade Soccer Tournament. Students came together to demonstrate teamwork, athleticism and school pride while they were cheered on by their peers, families, teachers and district staff. In the end, a team from Brooklyn Avenue School took home the trophy after a victorious final match. The district thanks Brooklyn Avenue School Principal Dr. Scott Comis for organizing the event, and extends its gratitude to the physical education teachers who prepared our students and taught them the skills and values that make a successful soccer team.

ROBERT W. CARBONARO HOSTS VIBRANT SPRING CHORUS CONCERT

Robert W. Carbonaro School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently welcomed the warm weather with its annual spring chorus concert, delighting families and staff with an evening of music and creativity. Led by music teacher Mrs. Ashley Wilkey, the school’s chorus performed a selection of cheerful songs that celebrated the spirit of the season. Adding to the excitement, students dressed as their favorite characters while performing beloved classics from The Wizard of Oz, bringing energy and imagination to the stage.

VALLEY STREAM 24 COMES TOGETHER FOR ANNUAL SIXTH-GRADE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

Students from all three schools in the Valley Stream 24 School District came together for a day of exciting and friendly competition at the district’s Annual Sixth Grade Hockey Tournament, held at Valley Stream South High School. Students showcased their athleticism, teamwork and school pride while being cheered on by families, teachers, district staff and peers. The event featured six spirited teams, with two teams representing each school: Robert W. Carbonaro School, William L. Buck School and Brooklyn Avenue School. Following a double elimination format, teams competed in a series of high energy matches throughout the day.

One of the most exciting moments of the tournament came during the semifinal round, when teams from William L. Buck and Robert W. Carbonaro battled into overtime after a hard fought tie. William L. Buck ultimately advanced to the championship game to face Robert W. Carbonaro’s first seeded team. In the end, Robert W. Carbonaro earned the tournament title after an impressive performance.

The annual tournament once again highlighted the district’s commitment to sportsmanship, collaboration and building connections among students across all three schools.

VALLEY STREAM 24 STUDENTS SHINE AT THE OLYMPICS OF VISUAL ARTS

Sixth grade students in the Valley Stream 24 School District’s Challenge Program recently competed at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s Olympics of the Visual Arts in Saratoga Springs, earning awards in several categories while competing against 75 teams made up of elementary, middle and high school students from across New York State.

Led by District Challenge and Enrichment Teacher Amanda Plutner and the district’s art teachers, students competed in categories including Illustration, Fashion, Painting, Design, Architecture, Sculpture and Drawing.

William L. Buck students JiaYin Z. and Kal-El D. earned first place in Drawing, as well as the prestigious Hyndman Creativity Award, for their project “Forest of Defense.” William L. Buck students Parker C., Nicholas R. and Shira W. earned second place in Architecture for “Pollinator Conservation Conservatory.” William L. Buck students Gabrielle C., Benjamin G. and Milan S. earned third place in Sculpture for “Majestic Mellifera Mother.” Brooklyn Avenue students Brianna G. and Sophia S. earned third place in Painting for “Canyon of Light: Where Light Meets the Forest.”

VALLEY STREAM 24 HONORS STUDENT EXCELLENCE AND CELEBRATES FORMER VS 24 STUDENTS NAMED SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN

Board of Education President Melissa Herrera, on behalf of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas, recognized the Valley Stream South High School Valedictorian and Salutatorian as proud Valley Stream 24 alumni during the district’s recent Board of Education business meeting, celebrating their outstanding achievements and continued success beyond their elementary school years in Valley Stream 24.

The Valley Stream 24 School District and Board of Education also celebrated the accomplishments of several students during the evening, which was filled with pride, recognition, and community support. Among the honorees was a student recognized for excellence in the Elks Essay Contest, who will now advance to the national level of competition.

The evening also featured recognition from principals, art teachers, Challenge Teacher Amanda Plutner, and representatives from the Elks organization, all celebrating students for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, leadership, creativity, and service. Board of Education President Melissa Herrera and Vice President Markus Wilson joined Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas for photographs with students to recognize and honor their outstanding accomplishments during the district’s recent Board of Education business meeting. Parents, community members, students, and staff filled the room to cheer on the honorees and celebrate the many successes taking place across the district.

BROOKLYN AVENUE STUDENTS CREATE CAPTIVATING PAINTINGS OF REPTILIAN EYES

Students at Brooklyn Avenue School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently explored the connection between art and science through a creative dragon eye project. Beginning with a two-dimensional design, students used shading and detailed artistic techniques to create realistic three-dimensional representations that demonstrated depth, form and dimension.

Using their knowledge of reptiles, students incorporated features such as horns, spikes and nostrils, blending scientific understanding with creativity to produce imaginative and highly detailed artwork.
