Attention "Senior Assassins"
Earlier today, officers responded to a public park following reports of an individual holding what appeared to be a handgun. This resulted in a heavy police response. When officers made contact with the individual, they were able to safely determine that the "firearm" was actually a water gun.
While this situation ended safely, it is a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong.
"Senior Assassin" season is underway. While this game is not sanctioned or endorsed by our school system or the police department, we know it happens. We have seen incidents across the country where this game has caused serious injuries or even turned deadly. We want you to have fun, but we need you to be incredibly smart.
If you are playing, please follow these non-negotiable safety rules:
Use Obvious Toys: Only use brightly colored water guns. It must be immediately and readily apparent to anyone looking at you that it is a toy, not a real weapon.
Don't Run from the Police: If officers approach you, DO NOT run, hide, or make sudden movements. Simply show your hands, stay calm, and explain that you are playing a game.
Cooperate Immediately: If an officer tells you to stop or pack it up, cooperate fully and immediately.
Understand Our Role: Community members don't know you're playing a game. If someone calls about a suspicious subject, it is our responsibility to investigate.
To the community: If you see someone or something suspicious, always say something. We will always respond to ensure everyone's safety.
