CPR & AED Awareness Week

EMS Captain Brandon Elliott recently stopped by Valley City Hall to highlight an important lifesaving tool: the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

In a cardiac arrest emergency, every second counts. That’s why it’s important to know where AEDs are located in the places you visit most—workplaces, schools, gyms, community centers, and public buildings. Taking a few moments to locate them before an emergency can make a critical difference.

If someone suddenly collapses and is not breathing normally:
• Call 911 immediately
• Begin CPR with hard, fast compressions in the center of the chest
• Send someone to retrieve the nearest AED
• Turn the AED on and follow its voice instructions

You do not have to be a medical professional to use an AED. These devices are designed for bystanders and will guide you through every step of the process.

The combination of early CPR and early defibrillation gives a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest the best chance of survival.

This week, challenge yourself to learn where the AEDs are in the places you frequent. A few minutes of preparation today could help save a life tomorrow.

Meet Victoria Champion, one of our Paramedics. She has been with East Alabama Fire District since 2023. Let’s get to know her!

1. What made you want to become a paramedic?
I was tired of working boring jobs
2. What’s your favorite part about the job?
Getting to use the skills and knowledge learned as a Paramedic, and administering medication
3. What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a twin!
4. What song instantly hypes you up?
Currently APT. By ROSE and Bruno Mars (great running song btw)
5. Dream vacation spot?
Savannah GA
6. What’s one item you ALWAYS keep in your bag or locker?
Snacks!
7. Most chaotic thing you’ve experienced at the station (PG version)?
One of the firefighters thought it would be funny to string Tatum’s yarn through the whole station while we were gone on a call. It was everywhere.
8. What’s one thing that can instantly improve your mood on shift?
Getting a sparkly alani from Soda Splash!
9. What’s your favorite thing about the EAFD crew?
Everybody is willing to help out and be there for you when you need it.

Happy EMS Week from the crew at East Alabama Fire District 🚑🫧
Serving this community is something we never take for granted — and if we’re gonna answer calls all day, we might as well have a little fun while doing it.

The patient care is serious… the choreography is absolutely not.Here’s to the medics, EMTs, late nights, lift assists, chaos, compassion, and wildly uncoordinated dance moves that somehow keep morale alive. 💛🖤

🚑 CPR Saves Lives
1. Call 911 or have someone else call.
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
3. Compress about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100–120 beats per minute (see video for popular songs to keep tempo)
4. Let the chest fully rise between compressions.
5. Keep going until EMS arrives or an AED is ready.
