The Heroin Paradox: Use Is Dropping But Deaths Are Increasing---What's Going On?

A new report released Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found drug deaths in 2016 increased more than 17 percent compared to 2015 (See link below). However, multiple indicators show that heroin use is steadily going down. For example, Illinois police seizures of heroin have consistantly dropped for the past three years. Quest Diagnostics reports that heroin has been dropping in workplace urine drug tests. The number of teenagers abusing prescription narcotics is also dropping. The 2016 National Household Survey on Drug Use found past month heroin use among teenagers is less than 0.1 percent. Add to all these indicators the 2014 federal rule that moved the narcotic prescription drug Vicodin (hydrocodone) and Percocet (oxycodone) to the very restrictive "Schedule II" (along side morphine), which has greatly reduced the pipeline of opioids.

So how is it narcotic deaths are increasing? Designer Synthetic Narcotic Drugs.

The Washington Post recently reported in a feature article that new gray market synthetic narcotics sold euphemistically as research chemicals are responsible for the increase in narcotics deaths. The Chicago Tribune recently quoted the Will Country (Joliet, Illinois area) Coroner saying designer synthetic narcotics are now the top cause of death. Chicago has experienced a 2,700 percent increase in designer synthetic narcotics overdoses in the past three years.

Although Fentanyl has been reported in the news, it's important to keep in mind that there are many other designer synthetic narcotics, (such as U-47700 pictured here) that are many times more potent than heroin appearing in the U.S. The number of new designer synthetic narcotics that could potentially be produced, known as designer drug analogs, is alarming. For example, there are 12 analogs of U-47700 that we have not yet seen in the U.S. in addition to the 43 analogs of fentanyl currently on the illicit drug market.

It's time society realizes we do not have a "Heroin Epademic"; we have a designer drug Tsunami coming from China. "Big Pharma" and "greedy, pill pushing doctors" make for easily repeated targets but distract from the problem: the international sale of designer synthetic narcotics using crypto currency like bitcoin on the unregulated dark web. We need dramatic change to address this next generation of substance abuse.

When it comes to drug addiction and abuse, a Texas A&M University psychologist believes certain populations may be at more of a risk than others because of what, up until now, has remained an unknown factor - chemicals in the environment.
