Congratulations to NILEA graduating class 19-42. Job well done! VPD is extremely proud of our graduates, Kaci Morris, Riley Owens, Logan Redmon, Jacob Myers, Jonathan Hand, and Michael Lippelt. Further congrats to Riley for finishing at the top of his class academically, Jonathan for achieving top physical fitness, and Jacob for being awarded as the Top Gun in firearms. Welcome back to VPD!

Two New Officers Sworn to Duty

The Valparaiso Police have added two new officers with the swearing-in of Kaci Morris and Riley Owens. Mayor Jon Costas performed the ceremony today at City Hall, with Chief Balon, numerous officers, family, and friends in attendance.

Kaci is a 2008 Valparaiso High School graduate who has attended Purdue University. Prior to becoming a Valparaiso Police officer, Kaci was a paralegal for the Kenneth Allen Law Group.

Riley is a 2015 graduate of Valparaiso High School who currently attends Purdue University Northwest. Riley is seeking the completion of his Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications.

Kaci and Riley will begin their training immediately and will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2019. Congratulations to Officer Kaci Morris and Officer Riley Owens!

Two Officers Promoted to Sergeant

The Valparaiso Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of two officers to the rank of Patrol Sergeant, effective immediately.

Mark LaMotte is a six-year veteran of the department, spending his career in Patrol. Mark is a graduate of Indiana University, Kelley School of Business, with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mark is also a department Field Training Officer and Firearms Instructor.

Keith Perez is a nine-year veteran of the department, who has spent a portion of his career in the Investigations Division and in Patrol. Keith is a graduate of Indiana University, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Keith is also a Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, and part of our agency Recruitment Team.

Sgt. Joe Hall New Public Information Officer

The Valparaiso Police Department would like to announce the lateral transfer of Sgt. Joe Hall to the position of Commander of Support Services. Sgt. Hall will assume all responsibilities of retiring officer Sgt. Grennes. This includes the duties of Public Information Officer for the department.

Sgt. Hall is a 12-year veteran of the department. During his years in the Patrol Division he was a field training officer, K9 officer, training instructor and hostage negotiator.

Joe’s new duties will include Coordinator of all Community Programs, CALEA Manager, Records Department Supervisor and Public Information Officer.

Sgt. Hall’s new duties will begin immediately. Congratulations Sgt. Hall!

Officer Retirement Announcement

The Valparaiso Police Department is announcing the retirement of Public Information Officer, Sergeant Michael Grennes.

Sgt. Grennes has been with the department for 25 years and the department’s Public Information Officer for nearly 20 years. He was also the department’s CALEA Accreditation Manager and coordinated the department’s community relations programs.

Mike has accepted a position with the MSD of Boone Twp. School Corporation (Hebron Schools) as Director of School Security and Safety. His last day with the department will be Wednesday October 31st.

New Officer Sworn to Duty

Joshua Biggs Newest Valparaiso Police officer

This morning in a ceremony at City Hall, Mayor Jon Costas sworn to duty our newest police officer. Joshua Biggs, 27 years old, was sworn to duty in front of Chief Balon, numerous officers, family and friends.

Officer Biggs recently worked for the Mishawaka Police Department for three years. He is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Evansville University. He is also a graduate of Washington Twp. High School.

Officer Biggs will begin his duties immediately. Congratulations Joshua!!

Three New Officers Sworn to Duty

Three new Valparaiso Police Officers were sworn to duty in a ceremony on Friday morning at City Hall. The three new officers, Jeffrey Kopil, Caleb Hall and William Smith were all sworn to duty by Mayor Costas. Numerous officers, family members and friends were present during the ceremony.

William Smith 29 yrs old, is a Purdue graduate with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree and a graduate of Northwestern High School. He had been working in sales.

Caleb Hall 25 yrs old, is a Valparaiso University graduate with a Bachelors in Sociology with a concentration in criminology. He is a graduate of Valparaiso High School and previously worked for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County.

Jeffrey Kopil 24 yrs old, is a graduate of Andrean High School and currently enrolled at Purdue Northwest.

All three begin their training immediately. Congratulations to Officer Smith, Officer Hall and Officer Kopil.

Officer Receives Honorable Mention Awards

Congratulations Officer Jon Watson

On Tuesday night Officer Jon Watson was recognized and received Honorable Mention Awards for his duties. The awards were presented to him at a City Council meeting in City Hall. The awards were presented due to the following incidents.

On June 12, 2017, Officer Watson was working on a High Intensity Drug Trafficking patrol along Interstate 94 (a joint federal grant) when he observed a vehicle traveling to close to another vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted and two individuals both from Michigan and one a previous felon were identified. A search of the vehicle located two guns in the vehicle, one stolen from a burglary in Pontiac. The subjects were arrested on gun charges, including a felon in possession of a firearm and driving while on a suspended license.

On October 2, 2017, Officer Watson conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle speeding on US 30 in Valparaiso. The driver was identified and a strong smell of marijuana was coming from inside the vehicle. The driver explained traveling from Minnesota to Fort Wayne and gave conflicting reasons for his travels. Further investigation located a small amount of marijuana and a handgun that had been stolen out of Genesse County, New York. The subject was arrested on numerous charges.

Due to Officer Watson’s actions three guns, two stolen were recovered and removed from the streets. Congratulations Officer Watson!!

Names Officers of the Year

Supervisor, Investigator and Patrol Officer of the Year Honored

The Valparaiso Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 76 has named their Patrol Officer, Investigator and Supervisor of the year for 2017.

Each award is voted on by the members of the Valparaiso F.O.P Lodge 76. This year Officer Jonathan Watson was named Patrol Officer of the Year, Lt. Jerame Simpson was named supervisor of the year and Sgt. Dave Castellanos was named Investigator of the Year for 2017.

Officer Watson has been with the department for 2 years. Sgt. Castellanos is a 16 year veteran of the department, and Lt. Simpson is a 11 year veteran of the department.

Citizens Recognized for Stopping Aldi’s Robbery

On October 7, 2017 at approximately 7:22 p.m., a male subject entered the Aldi store on Laporte Ave in Valparaiso and attempted to rob the store. The male subject approached a cashier and demanded cash. A short time later six customers physically restrained the male subject until police arrived.

Those six customers were recognized in a ceremony at the Valparaiso Police Department on Thursday night for their brave actions. Those individuals Harry Prassas, Kais Yehyawi, Richard Orelup, Terry Jordan, Chuck Collins and Russell Capellari all received a Valparaiso Citizen Community Service Award. Chief of Police Jeff Balon presented the awards.

Chief of Police, Jeff Balon explained, “due to the courageous actions taken by these six citizens, Aldi incurred no monetary loss, no one was injured and a violent felon was arrested. Their actions are an excellent example of the public and police working together to keep our community safe”.

Case Files Chicago partners with our friends Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. to provide bullet/stab resistant vests for our four-legged officers. Officer Kobita and K9 Kaiser & Officer Sobierjaski and K9 Vega are our most recent recipients.

Hi, back in the late 90's I did fund raising for you for needy families in Porter County for food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2000 I moved to VA but I believe you were still doing that, are you still doing that today?
And I thought the #circus only came to town when my family was here! Our local #FOP brought it to #Valpo officially seventy years ago. #18Jun1947 P.S.-just kidding about my family.
