Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As of 9:30 AM - 12/27/2022: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that some roads in the rural areas of unincorporated Porter County may still have snow and/or ice cover. The full fleet of trucks are on the roads salting and scraping the road surfaces. With the sun out and temperature reaching into the 20 degree range today, the salting should become more effective. And with forecasts of over 40 degrees tomorrow, roads should be completely clear.

A Travel ADVISORY is in effect for unincorporated Porter County until further notice. A Travel Advisory means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas. Please exercise caution when driving, or avoid driving if possible. Road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered. Unincorporated Porter County means roads that are outside the municipal boundaries of cities and towns.

A partial crew has been deployed to salt main roads and thoroughfares. Road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered. With temperatures rising throughout the day, salt should become more effective.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 8:15 AM - 12/25/22: The Porter County Highway Department cleared all drifted roads, main roads and thoroughfares, side roads, subdivisions and residential areas yesterday. Wind and wind gust speeds have dropped significantly overnight and the roads remain mostly clear this morning. Road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered because salt is ineffective at current single digit temperatures.

A partial crew will be on call to respond to any emergency calls.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations.

A TRAVEL WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR UNINCORPORATED PORTER COUNTY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 6:15 PM - 12/24/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that they have cleared all drifted roads, main roads and thoroughfares, side roads, subdivisions and residential areas.

On roads that have been plowed, the road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered because salt is ineffective at current below zero temperatures. Due to the winds, open areas (most particularly south of Division Rd.), blowing snow may continue to cause some drifting and reduced visibility. Travelers in the part of unincorporated Porter County south of Division Rd should exercise a great deal of caution if driving.

The full fleet has returned to base and their drivers have gone home to spend time with their families and get some much needed sleep. A partial crew in each district (north, center, south) will remain on call overnight to respond to any serious drifting situations and emergency calls.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 2:15 PM - 12/24/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that they have cleared almost all drifted roads, have made passes down main roads and thoroughfares and are now working on side roads, subdivisions and residential areas. Once they complete the side roads, subdivisions and residential areas, they will make additional passes on main roads and thoroughfares.

On roads that have been plowed, the road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered because the salt is ineffective at current below zero temperatures. Due to the winds, open areas (most particularly south of Division Rd.), blowing snow may continue to cause some drifting and reduced visibility.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please removed parked cars from the streets and roads so that plows can clear the streets faster. Cars remaining on the streets and roads may be towed.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 6:30 AM - 12/24/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that the snowfall has stopped. Wind speeds are at 21 mph and wind gusts are at 28 mph. Road surfaces are snow and/or ice covered because salt is ineffective at current single digit temperatures. In open areas of unincorporated Porter County, particularly roads south of Division Road, there are significant drifts of 4 to 5 feet with many roads being impassable at this time.

The full fleet of trucks were on the roads at 6:00 AM. Their first priority will be clearing drifted and impassable roads. Once drifted and impassable roads are cleared, they will move on to main roads and thoroughfares, followed by side roads, subdivisions and residential areas.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please removed parked cars from the streets and roads so that plows can clear the streets faster. Cars remaining on the streets and roads may be towed.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 6:00 PM - 12/23/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that the snowfall has stopped. In open areas, particularly roads south of Division Road, they are experiencing wind speeds of over 30 mph and wind gusts over 45 mph, creating nearly zero visibility, drifts of up to 4 to 5 feet and impassable roads. The National Weather Service is forecasting that the wind speeds and wind gusts will continue through at least midnight. On roads that are not experiencing drifting, the road surfaces may be snow and/or ice covered because the salt is ineffective at current below zero temperatures.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations. For their own safety, It is recommended that the public should stay off the roads south of Division Road.

The full fleet of trucks that are currently out will return to base at 7:00 PM. A partial crew will be deployed at 7:00 PM that will respond to emergencies only. The full crew will return at 6:00 AM tomorrow morning to clear all drifting and plow main roads, thoroughfares, subdivisions and residential areas.

IMPORTANT Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 2:15 PM - 12/23/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that the wind and wind gusts are creating near zero visibility conditions, most particularly in the parts of the county south of Division Road. In just the last hour, two plow trucks went into ditches. For the safety of our drivers, trucks are being taken off the roads south of Division Rd. for AT LEAST the next hour or two.

For their own safety, It is recommended that the public should stay off the roads south of Division Road.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 12:15 PM - 12/23/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that road conditions in unincorporated Porter County remain the same as our previous update which includes that the snow has subsided, but it is predicted that lake effect snow may impact northeast Porter County during the day. Wind speeds have increased to around 30 mph with wind gusts over 45 mph. The National Weather Service is predicting that the wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph will continue through at least midnight . The temperature is currently at -10 degrees with wind chill approaching -50 degrees. Drifting continues throughout unincorporated Porter County, with some roads impassable at this time. Because of the temperature, salt is ineffective and road surfaces have ice under the snow.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations.

The full fleet of trucks will remain on the roads until 7:00 PM and will continue to plow and clear drifts on main roads and thoroughfares. They will also TRY to do single passes through subdivisions but that is dependent on the ongoing drifting conditions of main roads and thoroughfares.

Wind speeds continue at around 20 mph with wind gusts around 30 mph. Temperature currently at -8 degrees with wind chill approaching -40 degrees. Drifting continues throughout unincorporated Porter County, with some roads impassable at this time. Because of the temperature, salt is ineffective and road surfaces have ice under the snow.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations.

Half of the fleet of trucks were dispatched at 4:00 AM and the other half of the fleet will be out at 7:00 AM. Their primary focus will be plowing main roads and thoroughfares ONLY.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 9:15 PM - 12/22/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that the winds are now reaching over 20 mph with wind gusts over 30 mph. Light, dry snow continues to fall with higher amounts in the northern/northeastern parts of the County. Many roads, mostly in the open areas, are drifting closed within minutes of being plowed and decreased visibility remains a concern. Temperatures are now below zero, making salt treatments ineffective.

It is recommended that driving should be limited to only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations. A partial crew will remain out all night to plow main roads and thoroughfares as well as responding to emergencies. The full crew will be dispatched at 4:00 AM tomorrow to plow main roads and thoroughfares.

A Travel Watch Now In Effect For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 5:45 PM - 12/22/22: A Travel Watch is now in effect for unincorporated Porter County until further notice. A Travel Watch means that road conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a Travel Watch, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended. The combination of increased winds and dry, light snow are creating both decreased visibility and increased drifting situations. There are some areas where it is difficult to determine the edge of the road and the right-of-way. Unincorporated Porter County means roads that are outside the municipal boundaries of cities and towns.

Road Conditions Update For Unincorporated Porter County As Of 5:00 PM - 12/22/22: The Porter County Highway Department is reporting that snow intensity increased over the past few hours. Wind speeds are starting to increase, and combined with the dry, light snow, drifting is beginning to occur, especially in the open areas. Additionally, temperatures are beginning to drop which will decrease the effectiveness of salting. Roads may be snow or ice covered and slippery. The public is asked to please exercise caution when driving, or avoid driving if possible.

The full crew will remain out until 7:00 PM, plowing and/or salting as may be necessary on main roads and thoroughfares only. At 7:00 PM, a partial crew will be deployed and remain out overnight to plow, and salt as may be necessary on main roads and thoroughfares only, and respond to emergencies.

WHERE...Porter County.

WHEN...From 3 PM this afternoon to 6 AM CST Saturday.

IMPACTS...Falling and blowing snow will result in white out conditions with zero visibility at times, making travel extremely difficult, if not impossible. Power outages will also be possible as a result of strong wind gusts to 55 mph. Roads may become ice covered as temperatures rapidly fall late this afternoon into early evening.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 to 35 below zero tonight through Friday night can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 20 minutes.

They have deployed a partial crew which will stay out overnight to salt main roads and thoroughfares as may be necessary. A full crew will be deployed at 5:00 AM tomorrow morning to salt all roads. If you have to be out, please drive slowly, cautiously and carefully.
