Honoring a Legacy of Leadership: Addie R. Lewis

As we prepare to honor our 2026 Civic Hall of Fame inductees on September 17, we also celebrate the remarkable individuals whose vision helped shape the Niceville-Valparaiso community.

Addie R. Lewis was truly a trailblazer in education. During her 42-year career with Okaloosa County Schools, she rose from classroom teacher to principal of Niceville School and ultimately became the first woman to hold an executive management position in the school district, serving as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.
Her influence reached far beyond a single school. She introduced innovative educational programs, helped establish the district’s first guidance program, and played an instrumental role in the creation of what became Okaloosa-Walton Junior College. After studying California’s junior college system, she prepared the brief presented to the Governor that helped lead to the college’s establishment in 1963.

Her commitment to community extended beyond education through service on the Valparaiso City Council. Her legacy lives on through the school bearing her name and through generations of students, educators and community leaders influenced by the standards she helped establish.

Addie R. Lewis was a visionary, educator and barrier-breaker whose work helped change the course of education in Okaloosa County.

On September 17, we will add another chapter to this proud history as we honor the 2026 Civic Hall of Fame inductees during the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce 70th Anniversary Gala & Civic Hall of Fame.
