Valparaiso Fire recently provided care for an individual who sustained scalding burns from boiling hot water.

As a reminder, follow these NFPA guidelines to prevent scalding burns. Additionally, if you or your children are removing hot liquids from a microwave above chest height, there is a higher chance of spilling those hot liquids onto your face and or body.

Valparaiso House Fire (5/18/2026)

The Valparaiso Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at approximately 11:41 AM on Madison Street.

Upon arrival, crews located a fire in the basement, which was initially brought under control. However, it was quickly determined that electricity from power lines was in contact with an air conditioning unit outside, which was backfeeding power through the unit back into the home and causing electrical arcing and popping in the basement. Until NIPSCO cut electrical power to the home, units stood by outside of the residence due to the live electrical hazard. Once power was cut, crews were able to fully extinguish remaining fire.

Horizontal ventilation took place to clear hot gas and smoke from the basement.

Occupants reported they had heard a pop outside and then opened the basement door to find smoke and fire.

All occupants were able to safely evacuate the home. No injuries have been reported.

Two cats did perish from smoke inhalation.

Crews have conducted overhaul operations to ensure all potential fire extension has been fully extinguished.
