Thank you Kankakee Valley REMC for an excellent demonstration/training on how dangerous power lines can be when responding to calls.

If you are ever involved in a motor vehicle crash and power lines are on your car, remain in your car if at all possible unless a fire hazard exists. If exiting your vehicle is a must, do not simply step out, but rather try to make contact with the ground as far away as possible from the vehicle without falling. Do not be in contact with the car and the ground simultaneously. When landing on the ground, do so with both feet. Move away from the vehicle slowly, shuffling your feet and keeping them close together until you are about 35 feet away.

Assume all power lines are live, all the time.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Leaving it plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and stress on the battery.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
