It was originally named the Lake Suburban Public Safety Training Council, Inc. The organization's inception was in response to a legislative mandate that all police officers in Indiana have a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of in-service training to maintain their certification as law enforcement officers. The four charter member agencies of the Public Safety Training Council were; Highland, Scherer

ville, Crown Point, and St. Over the next twenty years that number grew to forty-seven (47) police departments covering a seven (7) county radius. The name of the organization also changed. By 1990, it was known as the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Training Center and when basic recruit training was introduced, it was renamed to the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Yesterday, the Northern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy was honored to host the ISA Legislative Roundtable, bringing together law enforcement leaders and legislators for meaningful discussion on issues impacting public safety and our communities.

A special thank you to ISA President Jeff Balon and Executive Director Stephen Luce for their leadership and for making this important event possible. We appreciate the opportunity to facilitate these conversations and strengthen partnerships that support law enforcement across Indiana.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Patrol Deputy.

Hiring Timeline:

- Application Deadline: June 12, 2026
- Physical and Written Testing: June 20, 2026
- Background Investigations: June 22 – July 12, 2026
- Staff Interviews: July 13 – July 15, 2026
- Merit Board Interviews: July 20, 2026
- Psychological and Medical Evaluations: To be completed by selected candidates following Merit Board interviews.
- Tentative Start Date: August 1, 2026

Requirements for Appointment:

1. Be a United States citizen.
2. Reside in Jasper County or an adjoining county by the date of employment.
3. Be at least 21 years of age.
4. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent recognized by the State of Indiana.
5. Have no felony convictions.
6. Consent to physical and mental examinations by department-designated professionals.
7. Maintain a driving record substantially free of accidents.
8. Possess a valid Indiana Driver's License.
9. Demonstrate a strong work history and good credit rating.
10. Pass a written examination and character investigation.
11. Be in sound mental and physical health, with vision corrected to at least 20/20 in each eye.
12. Meet Indiana Law Enforcement Academy height and weight proportionality standards.
13. Be available for interviews with Command Staff and the Merit Board.
14. Comply with all training and employment requirements prescribed by Indiana Law.
15. Be willing to work a revolving schedule and submit to fingerprinting.
16. Maintain a telephone at your residence and keep the department informed of the number.
17. Ensure the Sheriff’s Office is your primary source of income upon appointment.
18. Refrain from prohibited political activities or those creating a conflict of interest.

Interested candidates should ensure all application materials are submitted by the June 12 deadline.

The Hobart Police Department would like to announce the graduation of one our newest officer from the Northern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Hobart Officer Paige Wood completed 16 weeks of training and will now begin the Field Training Component.
